I should clarify something: it's true that many Americans favored Mohammed bin Nayef, but MBN was outmaneuvered politically by MBS. MBN also has an ongoing addiction to opiates, which is due to the assassination attempt in 2009 by Al Qaeda. He didn't get bored and start popping pills, he was injured (likely worse than the government let on).

I've long suspected that the main reason Khashoggi was nurked was because MBS figured out that the CIA was using him to foment a color revolution in Saudi Arabia. Correct. MBS is the leader of Saudi Arabia. He runs the government. Mohammed bin Nayef was a Crown Prince and poised for leadership, but he was pressured to abdicate and make way for Mohammed bin Salman. King Salman is still de jure king, but he's been head of state. He's more like the figurehead while MBS runs everything.

Khashoggi was meeting with all of the US-aligned security ministers in SA, trying to foment a coup against MBS. I don't know he was working with/for the intel networks, but I can see the way the wind is blowing.

The Saudis killed Khashoggi because he was an effective journalist with significant international influence in the West and the Middle East. Trump was already buddies with MBS and MBN was already ousted before Khashoggi's murder. I would argue Khashoggi's assassination was unnecessary, since MBS already consolidated his political control. Khashoggi was more of a thorn in the side of the Saudi establishment at that point, but MBN is known to be a hothead.

Khashoggi had a long journalistic career in the Middle East starting in 1985. He was a long time correspondent in many Muslim countries and likely worked with the CIA during the Soviet-Afghan War. Khashoggi famously tried to convince Osama bin Laden (three times!) not to pursue his fight against the US.
