It pains me to say it, but Patton "God Killed the Wrong Spouse" Oswald was the only competent person on that show, followed by Day. Both had godawful scripts but you could tell they at least knew the general steps of acting.

Joel was thinking a cash grab + going back to the well. Millenial Science Theater 3K showed that Joel never understood what made MST3K great. He thought it was watching bad movies with friends and making stuff with really cringy host segments.

He didn't get that worked because the people he was watching bad movies with were clever and funny, and that needing to dig up random trash and building things out of it was charming and interesting, just having your laser cutter (BUSINESS EXPENSE, IRS!) print out shit is an objectively better result but contains none of the charm.

I thought they understood from the beginning that the host segments were when you stepped out to fix a snack or take a piss, basically just extending the commercial break. They were cute if you caught them, but nobody was tuning in for the host segments specifically. (I will give points to Evil Crow and the ten seconds or so of TV's Frank dueling with a reanimated turkey.)

The more flubs I see from creators returning to old projects, the more I think 99% of entertainment successes are accidental.

Though I loved his delivery in the early shows I think you're really right.

On the last bit given his background in prop comedy (and his scathing criticism of it at times) you'd think he'd know...

Reading a piece about the development history of Ghostbusters convinced me firmly of this.

MST3K host segments under Joel was hit or miss. They DID have some real solid hits; a lot of the musical numbers were great, sometimes they'd do something that referenced the film which were pretty solid. The invention exchanges had some good moments.
It worked best when they leaned into the community theater, negative-budget vibe.

Its basically the case of the guy from True Detective where he didn't realize that people didn't like Season 1 because of him inserting his faggot avant garde naval-gazing psychology, the liked it IN SPITE of it.

The issue with creators coming back is basically refusal to take risks on projects anymore. TV shows have budgets in the hundreds of millions now.

USA Network back in the late aughts found a number of big hits: Psych, Burn Notice, Suits, White Collar by setting a policy of taking on shows that other networks would never pick up (tbf they found a number of stinkers and even more that shot a pilot and died). They were too successful and as the risky payouts aged out they were replaced with boring, "safe" series.

Joel never had much of an edge, but what edge he did have got filed down as he went towards retirement age to the point of making safety scissors look punkrock. I mean how the fuck did he watch Jonah Ray doing stand up and decide "that's my lead funny man!"?
 
In all seriousness, I love that we continue to not talk about Wil Wheaton in the Wil Wheaton thread. That loser is so pointless as a human being that even in a place dedicated to mocking his soyboy fails, Little Willy is barely a blip on the radar in current year.

I disagree. Joel had a laid-back, laconic deliverly that I liked and I thought it was nice, easy to watch and low-stakes for late night viewing. Once it was on Sy-Fy, Mike and the rest really leaned into skits, recurring characters and SCREAMING about how much pain the movie was causing all the time. I like stoner MST3K but get really turned off by proto-Channel Awesome MST3K. A defintion without a distinction? Perhaps but I'm always going to prefer laid-back wisecracking over theatre kid screaming.

Also Joel was a funny stand-up even with the lowly label of "prop comedian". Check out his stuff from the 80s on SNL or Letterman.

I didn't watch the Brent and Jonathan episode with her, but I'm subscribed to their channel, so I got notifications and she has definitely had work done on her face and not good work either. She must be desperate to try and hold on to that image of being a young geek girl even though she's only a few years away from fifty.
