Business Disney to eliminate 1,000 positions

Walt Disney’s new chief executive, Josh D’Amaro, announced layoffs in an email to employees on Tuesday, as he looks to streamline the company’s operations.

About 1,000 positions will be eliminated, according to a person familiar with the development.

The cuts will fall on the marketing group, which was reorganized in January, and other parts of the company, including its studio and television business, ESPN, products and technology and certain corporate functions, according to the source.

Disney began notifying employees this week.

“Given the fast-moving pace of our industries, this requires us to constantly assess how to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs,” D’Amaro wrote in an email seen by Reuters. “As a result, we will be eliminating roles in some parts of the company.”

Like other Hollywood studios, Disney is adjusting to new economic realities, including a declining television business, shrinking box office and heightened competition. Warner Bros Discovery WBD.O and Paramount Skydance PSKY.O have also undergone layoffs.

The last significant round of layoffs at Disney came in 2023, when the company said it would cut 7,000 jobs as part of an effort to save $5.5 billion in costs. At the time, Disney was under pressure from activist investor Nelson Peltz to improve its financial performance, and stem losses at its streaming business.

Disney said it had employed approximately 231,000 people as of September, the end of its fiscal year.

Perhaps it could stop losing money by actually making good movies and shows rather than throwing billions in massive gambles of crap projects?
The problem is that "making money" and "good movies and shows" are not linked like that. Most of the highest-earning kids movies from the last decade were popular media adaptations that kids VILL bug their parents to see because it has their favorite character (see Minecraft Movie). Disneed's recent profitable movies were also sequels of already popular franchises like Inside Out and Zootopia, ev&doe they're more like extended TikTok slop than movies. They're still trying to inject wokeness into their slop, just doing it more subtly to not anger parents/MENA countries right off the bat (i.e. no open fags or troons). I watched Inside Out 2 with my family and couldn't help noooticing the racial diversity of the side characters. It had DEI checklist levels of diversity - niggers, chinks, spics, mudslimes, fatties, cripples, butch dykes but not explicitly LGBTQ+. There was also one scene encouraging race-mixing where the white female main character's fantasy crushes were racially diverse.

Disney needs to have a complete ideological overhaul or die, or else they will understand that their mistake was shoveling normies with Globohomo rather than drip-feeding them with Globohomo. They will then use their money and influence to make the propaganda more subtle and effective.

Aren't they also hiding the Black characters away from marketing, to avoid pissing off the Chinese and the CCP? They already did that with the Chinese Black Panther movie posters.

That's the billionaire whose daughter played Katara in that awful Avatar The Last Airbender movie. She's married to Brooklyn Beckham. He hates his parents and has called out Victoria Beckham for being an entitled bitch who ruined his wedding.

Anyway, Disney's best days are way behind it. Disney adults are propping it up with their gunts but even that won't last forever.

They have been doing that for over a decade. They remove Finn from all Star Wars posters and made Black Panther full suited with mask on for the China market. It was always used as a sticking point for their hypocrisy.

Try making quality products people actually want to engage with instead of corrupting every IP you own with gay wokeshit and watch that turn right around.
Those Blackrock DEI bucks were probably too good to pass up. But with Blackrock themselves saying they're dialing back some of the DEI stuff (If you can believe it) will Disney and by extent other entertainment companies start making quality stuff again, or do you think the generation of showrunners and writers are just too terminally pozz'd?

I'm sure the Disney fanatics and government bailouts will keep Disney afloat for another couple decades. I honestly think if Disney is in serious financial trouble either California or the feds will bail them out.

Don't believe that DIE shit will get rolled back, as they'll find a way to bring it back. And the rot from modern creators is so deep that it would take many years for it to go away, and those writers won't admit that people don't like the shit they put out, and will keep on trying to force it down people's throats.

I'm not holding my breath about anything at Disney or the wider entertainment industry changing much if at all.

Thatcher said that Socialism worked until it runs out of other people’s money to spend. BlackRock and Vanguard can’t keep underwriting retarded shit forever. Even more so now considering absolute shitfights like The Acolyte and some of the new Star Trek shows cost $50k per second of screen time produced (IIRC), or more.

If I had to hazard a guess the ludicrously high budgets are because BR/VG pony up the cash then the production companies find a way to turn that cash into costs they can get back with tax credits, possibly by paying large amounts of it straight back.

I think they’re in for the long haul. Granted, complete retards like Star Trek’s Kurtzman are on the outer, but they’ll just be replaced by somewhat less retarded showrunners who understand how to bury the political lede better. Taylor Sheridan is a good example of this, he’s quite adroit at slipping in DEI shit in a way that the dumber chuds aren’t able to notice or be offended by.

I’ve heard that giving a franchise to a fan to run is a good way to destroy it, but I’ve seen what giving an IP to someone who doesn’t give a fuck what the fanbase wants and just has a DEI axe to grind does, and it’s much, much worse.

I wouldn't doubt it for a second. Sure the Disney SW movies and shows are pretty CGI heavy, and back in the day it was expensive to produce, but from what I heard for the last like decade and a half all those artists were being underpaid. Not sure if that applies to ILM though.

Here's hoping whoever they replace him with can make watchable shows. I don't have high hopes for Star Trek as a franchise though. The series' quality has steadily gone downhill since DS9

Yup, and if not, India is standing by to help, saaaaar.
If you noticed the abysmal CGI in ‘Masters of the Air’ and ‘Furiosa: a Mad Max story’, these are perfect examples. India only covers ‘fast’ and ‘cheap’ in the fast/cheap/good, pick 2 equation.

Disney’s recent 3D animation offerings have been both expensive as fuck and laughably cheap-looking. The money’s going somewhere but it’s not showing up on the screen. And the returns at the box office aren’t making it look worthwhile.

We need to get back to a time where the gamut from family-friendly to adult-orientated didn’t mean BMWF, interracial lesbians and lectures on ‘privilege’ everywhere.

Here's hoping whoever they replace him with can make watchable shows
Terry Matalas single-handedly saved ST: Picard with S3, they should hand the IP over to him.

Now then you mention it, it's no wonder then the live-action remake of the Little Mermaid flopped there.

Don't forget the billions flushed down the toilet on Disney+ as they tried to win the streaming wars (which it turns out were never even fought!) with a lineup of "content" from fizzling-out old linear channels that the public had just abandoned along with cable TV and paywalled old archival stuff?

Which somehow didn't work?

How do feature films CGI go from Davy Jones to this?
Laziness.

CGI has become the practical alternative to anything you can't do by just standing on a sound stage.

Film outside? Nah, we'll just CGI up a background.

Monster makeup? Nah, we'll just CGI up the monster.

Miniatures? Nah, we'll just CGI up all the explosions.

Extras? Nah, we'll just CGI up a crowd.

The amount of CGI everything contains now has become excessive, and that means expensive, so to cut corners? They use Temu Photoshop instead of computer mainframes to shit it out faster, and it shows.

John Boyega has been dining out on getting removed from the New Star Wars for over decade at this point, blaming it on everyone and anyone who is white for it instead of the real culprits, the CCP, or rather, his bosses trying to appease the CCP by editing him out.

The savings by going cheap on the subcontracted CGI studios is lost and then some to pay the studios for a workforce bloated with woke and incompetence of their own who lose millions down sinecures marked "community trust and safety coordinator" while hiring the cheapest animators they can find and only putting them on contract for a couple weeks to do the work.

Marketers are jews, but it'd be more interesting if they just axed every single "creative" hack writer. And most of the artists. Bean mouth has to be destroyed. It assaults my eyes whenever I see it out and about during my day.
That trash will never go away, it's lowest common denominator art that they can pump out for pennies on the dollar drawn by blue haired tranny hacks. Meanwhile, people who work on getting the Bluth style down well enough to be called 'mediocre' in the style are left in the dirt because it takes actual effort and time.

If and when these fucks ever realize that what they're doing isn't working, efforts to fix the problems will be in vain. The self inflicted damage has been done, and these companies can't die off soon enough.
