The post was a mistake but it isn't the end of the world. I think there is a good chance he won't make a serious apology unless pressed hardly on the matter. While this incident can be dismissed as a bad joke or something done in bad taste, if he keeps making posts like it then be really worried then.
President Trump himself is known for having a big ego and a turbulent and perhaps strange relationship with his own personal faith:

The Pope does deserve some criticism but at the same time Trump is someone who sees prosperity gospel televangelist Paula White-Cain as a serious spiritual advisor and has given her positions in his administration
twice.
