The Tumblr Files - Official Thread - An exposé on the media and people that destroyed the Internet

They won, decisively. They have prestigious careers, they shape culture, they took over. Success after success after success. What was once laughable fringe is now not only completely normal but enforced.
Yes in the short term, not in the long one, contemporary sjwism/progresivism managed to get in power in mid 2015 and right now is failing thanks to it's own ideological nature of puritanism, constant reinvention and typical leftist infighting , whereas institutions like the comics code authority and hays code lasted for decades due to having a defined set of rules and morals left wing ones don't have this luxury and often rely on vague definitions of what could be considered problematic and thus it's now reaching the fatigue point just barely a decade and a half in dominance .
The worst I've heard about Toby was that he was the right hand man of a spiteful and abusive boss (Andrew Hussie).
That we know off, his close relationship with hussie gets him indirectly with Zoe Quinn and other very problematic figures, either Toby is in severe guilt by denial or has some pretty big skeletons in his closet

The fact he chose to make a male pregnancy comic of all things to annoy the MSPA forums tells us that there is a skeleton garage instead of a closet

No, no. It was a full album with vocals.
It was apparently based off of a specific rule to not depict any of the kids pregnant. I haven't got any more context than that though.

This might be a bit strange and sappy but I mean this when I say it: I can seriously picture OP as an actual historian/professor. Obviously I don't think it's expected that professional historians at universities would do in-depth studies on Internet culture, but you've nonetheless done an excellent job picking apart past events and explaining how they've led to the present situation. This isn't insignificant stuff either - these were all major parts of the zeitgeist years ago that have led to our current cultural shitshow. Countless people have complained about aspects of modern pop culture they find to be shitty but precious few have explained why it's that way. I wish there were more studies of culture with this level of honesty and accuracy.

Here's a critique of Deltarune and Toby Fox's work generally that's been making some waves the last couple days. It even goes into his predatory relationship with the fandom, so it might help with the next thread. Personally, I think it's a great read, tuned right into everything wrong with Deltarune:

Just reading it now. One thing that interests me already is that he doesn't have any other posts and seemingly joined blogger for this sole essay.

It was supposed to be a review on Backloggd, I think, but it got too long.

I'll save my full thoughts on this for later, but for now:
As previously discussed, Deltarune's story never truly progressing is almost certainly a hook to endlessly bait fandom. Deltarune almost functions as a perfect intravenous drip of never-ending content; endlessly filling, and tailored to anyone's bare minimum nutritional needs. It’s little more than content from a tube.
Why does this sound so familiar?

Endless supplemental shipping bait is present in Deltarune... [Toby] understands how important the aspect of shipping is to perpetuating a fandom.
Why does this sound so familiar?

I believe Toby Fox intentionally writes characters loosely enough for a fandom to be able to imprint whatever they want onto them. More importantly, I believe they're written so that people can easily emulate their wacky antics online.
Why does this sound so familiar?

Characters are made simpler because people fail to understand their complexities despite their boisterous “personalities,” while people misinterpret these same characters due to the amount of flexibility they intentionally allow.
Why does this sound so familiar?

Characters are mostly harmless without any actual negative traits, and if they have negative traits, they can be quickly explained away and minimized, as the game is so quick to do. Fandom artists can unironically view Spamton as being anti-NFT's, despite his entire character revolving around shady business practices and internet scams, because it's easy to forget he is supposed to be shady when almost all of his dialogue exists for punchlines.
Why does this sound so familiar?

As a result, players not endlessly glued to the idea of Deltarune... ...have missed pertinent information that could or would inform them of the story and characters better. Characters that presumably will be introduced later have already been introduced in this limited-information fashion to keep players engaged during the long periods of time between chapters.
Why does this sound so familiar?

Deltarune has reached a state of near mass hysteria within its fandom, with people reading into nearly every single line of dialogue or word spoken in order to find a pattern. I would describe this behavior as "lunacy,” but it's probably intended, in order to keep as much content and ‘buzz’ churning as possible.
Why does this sound so familiar?

Various enemies are designed and shaded in ways that are deeply at odds with each other. This is due to the amount of artists on board, but a project with a talented, well-visioned director would be capable of ensuring all the assets are cohesive and flow together seamlessly.
Why does this sound so familiar?

Toby Fox does not seem capable of managing a project, considering the amount of inconsistent visual styles present in Deltarune alongside its ridiculous development time. Deltarune first released in 2018, it is now approaching the eight year mark of release... ...Deltarune will absolutely not complete before it reaches its decade anniversary. Lack of planning, foresight and commitment has marred Deltarune and the fault can only come down on the project lead for failure to manage the project and the people onboard to ensure quick development speed.
Fricc it.

Brilliant. That's pretty much had been my opinion on Undertale years ago.

Toby Fox has created a simulacrum of a video game. It represents nothing. It provides no artistic merit or expression because the expression it offers is that of someone else. It is the mathematical average of the imposed desires of every single player.

What's even worse, Toby Fox is not the only one who can be described this way. It seems like most of the popular current year IPs, be it games, animation, comics or movies.... are simulacrums. It hurts my brain every time i am trying out something new from a recently acclaimed tranny faggot panderer and feel nothing. There has to be something, something the author themselves had put but all i see is a hive mind porridge. mixed with a self-therape session. No real mental work on their part to create something that could be a stand alone piece of media like before. Half or even the most of mental work is put on the viewer to finish the actual product and references to the previous ips.

It's depressing.

It's tiresome.

And the worst is that people are okay with that. They still bother with positives, encouraging, and not realizing they are just pushing everyone deeper into the swamp. As long as their brains and sexual organs feel good - everything is fine and dandy. Tumblr was one of the first spaces where such mentality thrived and grew. This place.... is not so much different, but at least it lets you express a different opinion on the matter.

It was a good critique, but I do feel that it shouldn't have dedicated so much time to attacking Toby based on inferences about him from his work. The points I particularly agreed with were the episodic nature of the game holding back what it can actually accomplish per episode, Toby clearly catering to the fanbase despite the game supposedly being his unaltered vision, the absurdly long development time and the game being more of a "shared experience" than an actual game.

Does anyone else recall when chapter 3 first released, the reactions within the first few hours were very negative (on /v/ at least)?

Now it makes total sense why Vivzie and Toby would collaborate with each other - their works both have the exact same issues.

I have my own problems with this article but it gets its points across really well. I said I was going to play Deltarune only when it was finished but knowing that mechanically the episodes don't build off each other is a pretty big disappointment. Plus knowing certain plot details kinda made do a double take on that idea even if there are 3 episodes left.

Oh false alarm Return to normal everbody
n hindsight, it really wasn't going to do well. It doesn't have the it factor like it once did all those years ago. I would say we dodged a bullet but the gun was old and rusty and the bullet was non-existent.
The main problem with Homestuck is that well... it's own nature for lack of better terms, from what i know it was the combination of the cultural atmosphere of peak web 2.0 and team special olympics particular sense of humor that brought fort the existence of MSPA, things that are missing or obscure from todays web audience combine that with Homestuck's overfixation on convoluted terms, concepts , mechanics, the storytelling itself and we end up having a product with a very difficult entry point

or the main problem is thinking anyone gives a fuck about whatever homestuck is in 2026 it may have had it's chance but that was 12 years ago

ask any normal human being what a homestuck is and they'll stare at you and say "isn't that the thing where a strongbad character reads emails or something?"

I think what's really been happening is that millenial artists were raised under the idea that conservative ideologies are restrictive and pearl-clutching (muh satanic DnD, muh violent vidya, muh swears, muh catholic school...) whereas liberal/left ideologies enable creative freedom and new ideas. Combine that with the current-ish political climate, where only left wingers are allowed to wear their politics on their sleeve, and you get the idea that most modern (popular) art is made by lefties, and a lot of it is.

Where is the "conservative art"? I think people don't want to be lectured or virtue signaled when they consume escapist art, so if a video game openly brands itself as some current anti-woke political manifesto, it won't gain much influence with people who want to play video games. Pizza Tower is an innocent, goofy Wario Land clone popular with discord trannies, yet it's apparently made by a chud, does that make it "conservative art"?

Tumblr fandumb garbage doesn't advertise itself as political; it's colorful, appealing escapist media at surface level with progressivism injected in it, yet the "wokeness" is not it's appeal nor the point of it, hence why you have a surprising amount of RW types who like Deltatroon, Disco Soylysium or the latest fotm fandumb craze (on this very site).
