I never understood the idea of Doug being a lolcow. If anything a professional tard wrangler.

I think the idea came from how he'd do things like Demo Reel and his skits and his review of The Wall, which showed how he overestimated his abilities, and there were the Kickassia stories that painted him as having some kind of delusions of grandeur.

Considering he still has a good enough following nearly two decades later, I don't think anyone can say he overestimates his abilities. And the Kickassia stories turned up to be full of shit.

For someone in charge of a company, trying new things and increasing scale is important, and if it doesn't work a bad manager can ruin the whole company.

He did overestimate his abilities though. Maybe not today, but he did at one point. You don't get a mess like "The Wall" without an idiot thinking that what he was doing was far greater than it actual was. It wasn't bad for him to try new things, but all the things he did were repeatedly crap. Everyone told him that they thought Demo Reel was crap, so he goes back to doing Nostalgia Critic. However, he tried for years to make it be like Demo Reel despite fans telling him that that wasn't what they wanted in Nostalgia Critic.

Regardless of what stories from behind the scenes that have been spun about Doug are true or not, it is obvious that Doug did want something more out of his career and thought he was going to get there with the things he did. There were a lot of points far earlier where he should have realized things weren't working. He also should have realized much earlier that he was out of his depth with managing the company. We also have everything that happened with the Indiegogo campaign.

The thing with Doug though is that he did realize eventually that the things he was doing weren't productive and he should be doing what the fans actually wanted out of him. He realized what his abilities actually were and what people liked about him. He is arguably one of the only YouTubers who found comfort with his craft and realized what there lot is in life.

He has a lot of lolcowish qualities and is right on the line for being one, but he never has really taken that full final step to becoming a serious one. I describe him as the guy who walked into the lolcow lobby but stopped and steadily walked his way back towards the door he just came in.

Things can always change and something might blow up with him, but if it hasn't happened after all these years I don't think he will ever really fully transform into a lolcow. One of the reasons why I feel the James Rolfe thread has blown up after all these years is because he serves a niche for a lot of retards that were wanting a lolcow descent from Doug.

Rolfe is more lolcowish due to appearing significantly less social, if it's not a long time friend of his he keeps very much at arms length. I can't imagine him taking extras for skits like Doug did besides the film where it went badly. He also partnered up with Screenwave (if I remember correctly) that make CA look professional in comparison.

Rolfe was smart enough to keep out of drama for a long time. The only reason he ended up as a person of interest is because screenwave. They put an autist like Rolfe into a podcast, they suck at editing, they write terrible scripts, and were the source of the whole plagiarism debacle. James was phoning it in, but they didn't try to cover up his lack of care by writing good scripts and putting him in places where he shines. Only mistakes James made were his terriblel autobiography and rex razor (or whatever the band is called).

While Doug had a lot of issues with overestimating his abilities as mentioned above, and a tendency to assume a half-assed job was good enough, he was also self-aware enough to know when he fucked up and that it was all his fault. He never blamed anyone else for his failings on the anniversary specials, he accepted that Demo Reel was a bad idea, and when people made fun of him he laughed along and even made friends with them.

That's what stopped him from fully crossing over. He had an ego but not one so big that he couldn't handle being told he was wrong.

I wonder if it could ever make a comeback with a new wave of content creators and retro reviewers? I can see it. Revamping the classic content formulas for a new generation with film reviewers targeting things that get overlooked in the field like a show reviewing cheesy classic B movies with a corny classic horror host inspired show runner instead of having some nerd picking apart hollywood/childhood icons for 80-90s kids for the millionth time and passionate game fans covering underrated videogames from the 2000s instead of the icons of the late 80s and early 90s like every other god damn mainstream game reviewer has talked about for the past 15 years on youtube.

It COULD work. Give the people some new things to watch and they will come, especially if you already have an online presence that can allow you to get the message out.

Very few people would actually visit a CA website daily when the alternative of just subscribing to the very very very few good creators would suffice. So the main draw for other creators - leeching off Doug disappears.

Plus the model of old style reviews just doesn't cut it anymore. Modern youtube talking about entertainment is much more editing based. Not to mention that a draw of the side is all kind of cultural niches that today have much better channels that talk about it.

Finally, it was always a den of vipers and mentally deranged people seeing Doug as promising them success rather than merely signal boosting them. You could be sure that most of them saved receipts and were willing to adjust facts to appear as the victims.

I agree that having your own site wouldn't work today but it could potentially be done on YouTube as a conglomerate channel. If doug would put in more effort he would definitely get more views.

I just randomly remembered the Resident Hazard series by Phelous (Phelan Porteus) and how much I enjoyed it back in the day. The videos are cut like a YouTube Poop. Surprised to see they're still available considering how much old Channel Awesome content has been memory holed. Phelous seems to have been good about re-uploading his old stuff to YouTube.

The Enrico skit had me in stitches.
