Opinion Why Europe Still Misreads America - Why Germans fear American religion, and what this reveals about Europe.

In my family, Sunday coffee was a blood sport. My grandfather, a former Wehrmacht soldier, stood on the political Right. My aunt, a passionate participant in the 1968 student movement, stood on the Left. Almost the only thing they agreed upon was their antipathy to Americans, expressed with identical certainty from opposite ends of the kitchen table. I was ten years old when I started paying attention to this. It was the late 1970s, and I watched political talk shows and Lou Grant—the American newsroom drama set at the fictional Los Angeles Tribune—with equal fascination. I tried to understand why the adults around me enthusiastically consumed American culture even as they denounced the country that produced it.
The standard narrative places the origins of European anti-Americanism somewhere around the Iraq War. The real history is older and stranger. In 1761, the French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, published his hypothesis that the New World was biologically “degenerate”—everything in America, he claimed, was smaller, weaker, and less vital than in Europe, including the people. Thomas Jefferson was so incensed that he had a stuffed moose shipped to Paris to prove Buffon wrong. The German poet Heinrich Heine, meanwhile, called America “that pig-pen of freedom, inhabited by boors living in equality.”

What interests me about these early critics is not their inaccuracy but their consistency. The specific complaints change every generation—too primitive, too powerful, too capitalist, too confident—but the underlying mechanism does not. You do not spend 276 years obsessing over something you merely dislike. That is the behaviour of someone working through a deeper anxiety.
I identified this pattern through experience. A German engineer drives a Tesla to work, uses Google for research, streams Netflix at night, and delivers a confident lecture about American cultural shallowness over dinner. A German politician tweets outrage about American climate policy from a country that had to reopen coal plants after it shut down its nuclear reactors. The pattern transcends political affiliation: during the Trump years, I watched the German Left discover a passion for criticising America that the German Right had practised for generations. The vocabulary changed—from “American vulgarity” to “threats to the liberal order”—but the emotional register was identical. My grandfather and my aunt said “damn Yanks” with the same conviction, and their political grandchildren have inherited this bipartisan reflex intact.

But there is one aspect that cuts deeper than debates about foreign policy or capitalism, and that is religion. When German observers confront American religiosity, something happens that goes beyond cultural criticism. It triggers genuine bewilderment that often shades into alarm. According to 2022 data, 37 percent of Americans describe religion as “very important” in their lives. In Germany, the figure is thirteen percent. For most European intellectuals, this God gap confirms a simple diagnosis: that America is backward and still awaiting the secularisation that Europe completed decades ago.

It should be noted that the gap is a lot narrower than it has been in recent years. In 2007, 56 percent of Americans described religion as “very important” in their lives. Church attendance and daily prayer have declined in parallel. On its face, this trajectory appears to confirm the European expectation that America is secularising, merely more slowly. But the character of American secularisation differs from Europe’s in ways that matter.
First, the decline appears to have stabilised; Pew’s most recent data show relatively little volatility since 2020 across key indicators. Second, America’s religiously unaffiliated—now roughly 28 percent of adults—are not secular in the German sense. Most still profess belief in God or a higher power; they have rejected institutions more than metaphysics. Third, the civic infrastructure built by American churches over two centuries does not vanish when attendance declines. Traditions of voluntary association, local self-organisation, philanthropy, and lay leadership persist beyond formal membership. The institutional habits outlast the theology.

The discrepancy between Europe and the US may have begun as far back as the Reformation. Both Germany and America are children of Protestant theology, but they are children who drew radically different lessons from the same parent. Luther taught submission to temporal authority, as in Romans 13:1: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.” The good Lutheran was obedient, orderly, and deeply suspicious of enthusiasm. Faith was a private matter, not a source of public energy. Certain strands of German Protestant political theology tended toward hierarchy, deference to credentialed authority, and a melancholy inwardness that shaped political culture for centuries—with consequences that ranged from impressive institutional discipline to, in its darker moments, a dangerous vulnerability to authoritarian appeals.
Calvin taught something different. Prosperity was a sign of divine favour. Work was a calling. The community of believers was a voluntary association of equals. When Calvinists arrived in America—Puritans, Huguenots, Presbyterians, Dutch Reformed—they brought a theology that was essentially entrepreneurial. American churches became competitive enterprises: they innovate, market, fail, merge, reinvent. European state churches, by contrast, operate like monopolies: they are funded by taxes, governed by bureaucracies, responsive to no one in particular.
The result, over four centuries, was two fundamentally different institutional environments built on the same Reformation foundation. To understand America without understanding this divergence is like trying to understand water without knowing about hydrogen. And this is where European analysis most consistently fails. The misunderstanding is not about theology—it is about institutions. The secret of American religion is not that Americans believe more, but that they organise better.

Go to an American church—any church, from a black Baptist congregation in Atlanta to a Pentecostal megachurch in Texas—and watch what happens outside the sanctuary. People organise. They raise money. They speak in public. They debate governance. They manage budgets, staff, and real estate. They build networks that cross racial, economic, and professional lines. They practise the skills of democratic self-governance every single week, in an environment that is voluntary, competitive, and answerable to its members.
Tocqueville noticed this in 1835, and it remains true today. American churches are not just places of worship; they are arguably the most distributed civic training network in modern history. The skills Americans develop in churches—public speaking, fundraising, community organising, conflict resolution, leadership—transfer directly into business, politics, and civil society. This is the social capital, in Robert Putnam’s terminology, that American religious life generates as a byproduct of its primary mission. Where Europe centralised faith in monumental institutions, America decentralised it into networks of voluntary association. When European intellectuals dismiss American religiosity as irrational, they are dismissing the most powerful engine of voluntary civic life in the modern world—without understanding the institutional incentive structure that makes it work.
There is one more observation that I think deserves consideration, though it will not make me popular on either side of the Atlantic. The Great Awakenings that periodically swept America—in the 1730s, the 1800s, the 1850s, and the 1970s—share a recognisable architecture: a conviction of moral crisis, a call to purification, a division between the enlightened and the benighted, and a promise of transformation through collective commitment to new values.
The progressive movement that has significantly influenced Western institutional culture since roughly 2014 exhibits a strikingly similar structure: moral crisis (systemic injustice), purification ritual (acknowledgment of privilege), insider–outsider boundary (the awakened and the unawakened), and transformative promise (equity, diversity, inclusion). In my religious youth, I was told not to listen to the Rolling Stones because they were “devil worshippers.” Today, speakers are disinvited from universities because their ideas are “harmful.” The vocabulary has changed. The cognitive architecture has not.
This is not a polemical point but an analytical one. If the parallel holds, it suggests that secular Europe has not transcended religious patterns of thought so much as adopted them without the institutional infrastructure—the self-correcting mechanisms, the theological traditions of internal debate—that organised religion has developed over millennia. American religion, for all its excesses, has centuries of experience managing the tension between conviction and tolerance. The newer secular variants have none. The question is whether they will develop such mechanisms, or whether the absence of them will prove costly.

Europe’s most secular major nation is obsessed with the West’s most religious one. The obsession exists not despite the religious difference but because of it. American faith represents an alternative institutional model—decentralised, voluntary, competitive—that generates civic energy in ways European state structures do not. Understanding this model on its own terms, rather than through European assumptions about what secularisation should look like, is not merely an academic exercise. It is a prerequisite for any serious transatlantic relationship.

Americans have many problems. An inability to argue is not one of them. The God gap is not a measure of backwardness. It is a difference in institutional imagination—one that shapes civic energy, social capital, and ultimately political resilience.

From one Catholic to another: "Your life may be the only Gospel someone ever reads". Souls are saved and the world is changed by our example, not our opinion.

Christianity isn't merely a political ideology or philosophical worldview. Nor is evangelization as easy as in a strategy game where you walk up to someone and "wololo" at them onto your side. It's a relationship with Jesus Christ.

It's our mission to be Jesus to other people. Don't be disheartened if people reject you or are uninterested; the same thing happened to the Apostles and Jesus Himself many times.

You wanna make Europe Catholic again? It's gonna take one person at a time. It will require you to plant the seeds of a tree whose shade you will never sit beneath.
Yeah, I was more thinking about a way to make young Catholics meets, in order to have more Catholic families and babies. I know it's gonna takes decades, maybe centuries to be honest, the Republic here is fighting against Catholicism since the French Revolution. There is a real surge in the number of converts though, so I'm not dooming.

I don't know where you are in France, but where I am, there is zero community life around the churches despite the fact that everyone is Catholic and most of the kids go to Catholic school. The minimum age to attend Mass around here appears to be around 80. I stopped going because of the shitty way that the church treated parishioners during the lockdowns.
I live in a pretty big town, here it's pretty lively. I can't talk about how it was during lockdowns, since I wasn't Catholic at the time, but I've heard the priest talking about it in really harsh words some weeks ago, he was really unhappy with how it went for the Church.
My parish is mostly composed of old people, but at least 1/4 of the attendance is made of young adults, many married with children. There's a community life, choirs, a young adult group, some associations, etc... But if you want to learn about it, you need to ask specifically to someone if there's something existing. No one seems to talk about it, and I've only learned about the young adult group lately after 3 months of search for a group like this. I think we need to make our churches as a hub to meet new people and have a good time outside of the Sunday mass, that kind of group shouldn't be hidden.

Care to guess how much medical aid costs are wasted on niggers and illegals?
I'm sure it is probably a lot. Granted, I'd guess it would only be in the hundreds of millions without figures in front of me, which in the grand scheme of things, is not that much. But do you honestly think that if (inshallah) all illegals and niggers disappeared tomorrow, that we would suddenly get free healthcare?

It's not about them, it's about greedy billionaires being completely unwilling to pay as much in taxes as someone who makes $100k a year. If billionaires paid proportionally as much as you in tax (you do have a job right?), you could have every nigger in the country scamming every hospital, and I'd imagine it would still be more affordable for the average tax payer than the system we have now.

I think we probably agree on this issue, I'm just more inclined to think that the reason is rich assholes who have disproportionate influence in politics, than blacks and spics who barely vote. However, I would still definitely like to see the figures on the waste if you have them.

I don't have figures on me at this moment so i hope someone else will chime in with them, because i remember someone calculating it to be billions, and the thing is it's a lot easier to get rid of illegals then it is to force billionaires to spend money when they can just avoid paying taxes through legal loopholes. charity must be done by will, not by force, and it never works properly through force.

I won't argue about the differences between the German and American Protestant churches, as a Catholic I don't know much about it. I like the idea of including more volunteering and organization in our churches though, as a Catholic it's something we really struggle with, and it will be necessary to recreate a real community aspect in our life.

I also don't think the disdain for America coming from Europe is about religion. In France, I don't hear that much about it, people are mostly criticizing other stuff, like the fact that your country is only 300 years old, or that you don't have universal healthcare like us. I think it's not so much about the "bad" aspects of America than it is about the superiority complex we have over other countries though. There is the same amount of criticisms about Germany (barbaric alcoholics trying to rule Europe), England (ugly bastards with horrific food, and you burned Joan of Arc), Spain (lazy brown men sleeping all day under the sun), etc...
The issue with Europe is that the institutions are still controlled largely by aristocrats and their stooges. It was no secret in the 1800s that the continental European establishment actively rooted for the failure of America. They saw us as a potential threat after the French Revolution and the rise of napoleon. They needed America to fail because America, although it had some elites, was largely ran by the merchants and self educated farmers. Many in Europe, and especially the UK, assumed America would have its little experiment then beg to be taken back in by the English monarchy to bring back order. Just like what happened with the English when they executed their monarch and were ran by the parliament. This never happened. The European establishment then tried to bring monarchy back into the Americas and specifically to Mexico. They funded the Mexican conservatives and sent over Maximilian to get a foot hold. With the long game being the eventual overthrow of the American republic. The us supported Benito and the Mexican liberals who would ultimately prevail and execute Maximilian to send a message and in retaliation to his execution of Mexican liberals.

The American experiment seemed to come to an end much to their delight in the American civil war. The observers there largely concluded that the lessons wouldn’t be applicable to Europe because America had more forests and wasn’t as densely populated. A few English observers raided alarm bells that America could take Canada and be a real threat if they wanted to and that such a total war was a real concern, but the continental Europeans largely ignored this warning. They believed that warfare in Europe would be quick and decisive, that casualties would be minimal. The victory of Prussia over Austria and France seemed to confirm this.

Then WWI broke out. The Great War basically buck broke Europe. The casualties were immense. In retrospect the parallels with the American civil war were made clear but there was little solace in the deaths of millions. Furthermore, it resulted in the European aristocracy losing significant power and influence. It was essentially a family feud that spiraled out of control as the bodies stacked up, including the royal family of Russia. Across the board the nobility lost ground, influence, and power. It was a nightmare that was only going to escalate as it directly led to wwii and the terminal decline of the European colonial projects.

In the wake of this decline America steps in to protect Europe from the expansion of communism. America sees Europe as the mother continent and assumes that there is shared cultural values. America pours trillions into rebuilding the continent, gives them favorable trade deals, and helps to reindustrializd them. To the European establishment this is an utter humiliation. Not only did a bunch of peasants succeed without their guidance and greater clarity. They exceeded them. And no only exceeded them but when Europe destroyed itself the peasants rebuilt it all up. From the American perspective it was acting in its interests but the Americans were and are largely ignorant to the injured pride of the European elites.

The interpretation of the world wars are different in the us and in Europe. The European elites downplayed colonialism and focused on nationalism as being the cause. In their conclusion the fever of the people, which they whipped up, was to blame. Furthermore, the people clearly could not be trusted to vote correctly because the Germans voted in Hitler. Therefore they had to manage liberalize democracy. The institutions and laws they built were with the express purpose of curbing the influence of the people and to ensure they vote correctly and if not that it wouldn’t matter. The purpose of the EU was not only to be a trade zone hit rather to fulfill the European elites long held dream to unite the continent under their enlightened rule. The Americans assumed they shared cultural values in regards to strong rule of law, the ability to defend themselves, love of God and country, etc which was not the case.

The European aristocracy blames nationalism and religiosity for the collapse of their power. They have long held a deep reservation towards national sentiment because they do not identify with the people they ruled. Nationalism could easily mean revolution against them. They loved to whip it up when it served their ends but they never truly believed in it or liked it. Many European conservatives do not realize that the monarchy they defend not only hates them, but views them with suspicious contempt and sees them as interchangeable numbers on a spreadsheet. As the finish conservatives for example defend the monarchy from the left, the establishment there intentionally ignored their desire to leave the EU and to stop migration. To the European elite, national identity is not only an inconvenience but a threat. To them there is no difference between some guy waving an English flag and Muhammad. They’re both equally below them. The European elites do not care that the commoners get raped, murdered, or replaced. Furthermore, the new money of America wants to emulate their European counterparts.

Likewise, they blame religion for the various long conflicts and they’ve had a long project of removing religion from Europe in order to establish their ideal society. They also blame religion for the rise of nazism and intentionally undermined the various religions of Europe.

European elites indifference to national ideas one of the major issues with their colonial empires which led to violent civil conflicts when they left their colonies. Likewise, it will lead to violence in the west as systems buckle.

The euro elite frequently ally with Jewish factions for various reasons. The first is neither identity with the people in their countries. The second is that they could circumvent some of the rules regarding usury. The third is that they often ran in the same intellectual circles. Going back to Maximilian I of Mexico, part of why he lost is that the Mexican conservatives wanted a Catholic king but in many ways Maximilian agreed more with the liberal rebels. This hurt his support and ultimately the ability to exercise control over Mexico resulting in his execution.

The current European elite are completely ignorant of the threat to mass migration and believe they can make the neo-Europeans unbelievers. They successfully removed religion from Europe, and especially Germany, and they believe they can do it to Muslims. They think they can make Muslims into subservient diversity drones that act and think like them but are only different in a skin deep kind of way.

Thus, they view America’s values of national pride and religion as not only barbaric but active threats. They work with American intellectuals and elites to export their project to America. Their end goal is that we protect them so they can have infinite gibs up until they can unify the continent or at least long enough to form a panEuropean army and kick us out. The Germans in particular fund antifa and far left views in order to align America with themselves. They are actively subverting our country and our culture because they perceive us as existential threats. Hence why stopping USAid was an essential move. Also why we must not only remove the NGOs and progressive nonprofits here but we must actively wake up to the bitterness held against us from the European establishment and their allies.

Basically, the progressive establishment is a giant time bomb. They have idiotic views in regards to energy and demographics. It’s basically a religion to them. They may have stopped believing in God but underneath the surface they’re still fanatics for their enlightened views which they push through European institutions. Their deindustrialization is also partially encouraged by Russian saboteurs but it’s largely a self goal. They believe it full heartedly and will not be dissuaded. They also believe incorrectly that they can en masse take the least educated and most radical Muslims and make them into globalist drones. They incorrectly believe that they can act as agents of their own agendas and ignore their very open desire to islamify the West. They are repeating the same mistakes they made in colonizing Asia and Africa but within their own borders.

Their greatest error is that the European elite think that just because they have more people that it will prop up their welfare state. The truth is that the majority of migrants are not net contributors but net takers. Which makes sense. If you’re well to do why would you leave to Europe? The only people who will go are the dregs of society with little to offer. To mention this is heresy politically incorrect and will result in prison time, but it doesn’t change reality. Mass migration is a catalyst for their welfare systems to collapse. Rather than collapsing after all the boomers are dead it’s collapsing now. And when it does collapse, they will not have the honesty or wherewithal to accept responsibility, and will blame America.

In my opinion America should support nationalists and conservative populists in Europe. Bringing sanity back to Europe is a net positive for the world and for America’s interests.

I don't have figures on me at this moment so i hope someone else will chime in with them, because i remember someone calculating it to be billions
If that is the case, again, it's due to the healthcare industry scamming the taxpayer. People who get medication using private insurance cost their insurance significantly less than those on Medicare and Medicaid, so it would follow that those who use Medicare and Medicaid (i.e. old people and niggers) would cost the system more, but it's not because they're using more of our healthcare.

Pharmaceutical companies charge our current public health systems whatever the hell they want because that profit pays out Democrats, who created said systems through legislation. You end up paying for it, but the money doesn't go to blacks, it goes to shareholders. We don't have any equivalent in the U.S. for the type of universal healthcare that exists in Europe and most other developed nations. You would have to use figures from European countries because it's not as simple as who's a nigger or not.

tl;dr: Big Pharma-controlled fake-public health insurance (created by Democrats and used by niggers and old people exclusively) charges more for drugs than private insurance, so it's not the blacks' fault they cost the system so much, it's the elites ripping the taxpayer off.
lot easier to get rid of illegals then it is to force billionaires to spend money when they can just avoid paying taxes through legal loopholes.
Is it? If so, then why has Trump sucked so badly at deporting illegals that his numbers are worse than Biden's (which already weren't great)?
Also, if it is the case that it's so hard to make billionaires pay, then how do the Europoors do it? There seems to be something uniquely greedy about the mega-rich elites in the U.S. and how they shift tax policy (by buying politicians lol) so they don't have to pay.

Also this has nothing to do with charity. Charity is a dead meme.

For most European intellectuals, this God gap confirms a simple diagnosis: that America is backward and still awaiting the secularisation that Europe completed decades ago.
"European intellectuals"
Importing third world brown hordes to rape your children is the ENLIGHTENED lifestyle, if you wanna know the truth of it. Amerifats, time to step up and join in us in the 21st century!

I can't fully agree about the rest of your post, because as a French, we don't have the same relation with our monarchist past than the rest of Europe. Our elites are openly against our national identity, and they have been since the French Revolution.
In any case, the most useful thing Trump could do to change Europe is to support the nationalists here.

Yes, you are a pack of godless savages whose closest brush with actually being civilized was in stealing the skin of the Roman Empire and wearing it for nearly two millennia before some Freemasons told you that you were too cool and enlightened for Christianity and that all you really needed was philosophy and bureaucracy.
In 1761, the French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, published his hypothesis that the New World was biologically “degenerate”—everything in America, he claimed, was smaller, weaker, and less vital than in Europe,
LOL. LMAO even.

2.7+ million by the first year, yet you're out here specifically pulling an article from February of last year.

Meanwhile Biden let in over 15+ million was it?
I'm not saying Biden was a net positive for us, I'm just saying that it's not as easy as Mr. anime avatar was trying to make it out to be. Also 15-2.7 is not 0, so he's got some cleaning out to do and frankly Donald (1 quintillion Indian H1Bs) Trump won't do shit. He hates Whites just as much as any Democrat.

Edit: I don't want to keep derailing so this will be my last post on the issue. We could have universal healthcare if healthcare companies weren't evil and Trump sucks at deporting spics. Niggers cause a lot of problems, but this isn't one.

I will still never get over Europeans criticizing, "America," with no clue how large our country actually is. Some of our states are larger than entire other countries. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different cultures here, and I don't mean white people and brown people when I say that.

Dude it's been cooked since day one because Americans pay for European "free" healthcare.

How about you actually read what I posted previously? It's not "muh billionaires", it's mainly European governments making Americans pay the higher cost for their "Free" healthcare. 😑

Aka: why it's so expensive in the first place

Part of the fraud and cost increases is all the illegals using the ER like a clinic and not having to pay a single cent.

You may wanna read up on what I posted and look into it.

That reasoning has never made sense. America has been both the biggest soft power & military power for many decades. If anything, it would use that position of power to get deals more advantageous for itself, unless you're arguing the U.S. government (both the democrat and republican ones) & all U.S. companies just went "Fuck money!" for nothing but shits and giggles.

It's the kind of "they're weak and useless" but also "they're the biggest threat to humanity and control everything" narrative that you see leftists and marxists accuse white people of. Apparently America is "so weak and stupid that it lets itself become a victim for no reason." That ain't America.

Part of the fraud and cost increases is all the illegals using the ER like a clinic and not having to pay a single cent.
This is one of the bigger points for sure - something you can, funny enough, see in equal measures across europe. There's countless articles about how costs there increased exactly when the refugee wave started happening.

In the end it's mainly Euros seeing the Yanks as backwards brutes despite being bailed out by them the last century. It's basically the only case they can argue in public to be better than another group (as long as they don't specify any non white group in the USA).
Tbf, there is something to this, an issue that negatively affects Americans that is generally being ignored.

The simple facts are that Europeans on average actually spend much less of their GDP per capita (which is lower than the U.S.' to begin with) on their healthcare, yet aren't getting charged a second time when they receive that healthcare, unlike Americans.

I usually see people claiming that European countries have "free" healthcare (as in, healthcare they only have to pay for once through taxes, and then get to access) because of funding from other countries. But if that was true, the GDP per capita they save on spending on things like military would then have to go towards their healthcare system. In reality, both Europeans' military spending and healthcare spending by GPD per capita is lower than the U.S.'

So Americans are getting shafted somehow. In a way that has nothing to do with Europe. In a way they shouldn't be. The question is how and why and how to solve that. Cause right now, Americans get fucked twice, once when they pay taxes and then again when they ask to receive that healthcare they already paid for when they are asked to pay for it a second time.
There are some reasons for it:
* Higher drug prices to pay for the third world.
* Insurance companies and hospitals hiking prices.
* On average a lot more healthy population.
But the advent of niggers and muzzies in Europe break those systems due to being based on high trust.

LOL. LMAO even.

To be fair he wasn't exactly wrong about the natives who had crossed over the land bridge. And still haven't invented the wheel or left the stone age thousands of years later when the Vikings had first shown up.

Its impressive how much I agree with these remarks... its also impressive how much I agree with how all those people view your fellow French. Not you though, you're a great poster and I'm gonna miss you when the USA decides to preemptively nuke New Algeria to contain the Muslim hordes.
I'm sure life is fairly different between California and Ohio, or between France and Bulgaria.
Its about 1,100 miles as the crow flies from Paris to Sofia. From Sacramento (capital of California) to Columbus (capital of Ohio) its about 2,300 miles. Paris to Moscow is only about 1,500 miles. So yes, quite different.
LOL. LMAO even.
Yeah, there's a reason ol' TJ sent him a stuffed moose as way of reply.

Its impressive how much I agree with these remarks... its also impressive how much I agree with how all those people view your fellow French.
We're all tsundere after all. I could banter all day about England, but the world wouldn't be as fun without them, and I want them to rise again. USA is a country full of fat people eating burgers all day, but we still love you

I'm gonna miss you when the USA decides to preemptively nuke New Algeria to contain the Muslim hordes.
Don't worry, sooner or later we will make them go back.
