I don't find it hard to believe its possible.

Iran has promised for many, many, many years that if it were to come under attack it would spam missiles/drones at every single gulf city.

I don't know how much of their government is actually left, but its not like this wasn't forewarned about a very long time ago.

This might actually point to a degradation of decision-making skills within the central circles of Iranian government after the Iranian-Israeli wars back in 2025, and maybe starting even as early as Trump's assassination of Soleimani.

Somewhat related, but a reason why a lot of the Gulf States aren't attacking back is because their militaries are made up of incompetent leadership (nepotism), and their Air Forces have crappy pilots; even if said pilots are flying modern era Western Aircraft.

It was both - Iranian capability was largely smoke and mirrors, and the US and Israel dispersed said smoke and smashed said mirrors during the 12 Day War.

That's because the "projections" were based on:
1. The AA gear and radar Iran bough from the chinks working as advertised. lol
2. The involvement or support from the chinks, in some capacity.
3. The involvement or support from Russia, in some capacity.

Only people who know nothing about how much of a paper tiger China is, who lies out of their ass about any and everything, would have believed 1 and 2.
Russia cucked themselves in Ukraine and can't do shit anymore, anywhere else.

The strikes disabling some of Iran's AA capabilities during the 12-day War definitely helped, but they could have also just been done today/yesterday if needed, before sending in the Jets. So those three assumptions were the main backbone of any concern about such an operation.

The only real potential win for Iran here is either scoring an extremely lucky hit on some big US asset or sparking a revolution in Bahrain (Shia country ruled by unpopular Sunni monarchy. Iran also used to claim it). Both of those involve hitting the Gulf states.
