We've had weeks of build up for these, we have a pretty good idea what assets have been moved into positions and amusingly none of them are ground troops, other than maybe special forces. All of the logistics are naval and air focused, not ground support. We're not prepping for boots on the ground, but we are probably prepping to anally violate the Iranians from the air. "What if they close the straits?" With what navy? Last time the Iranian navy squared off against the US Navy we raped them so hard that the president did the Simpson's already dead meme out of mercy.

That is definitely a goal. But Trump has clearly stated the goals in his speech today. There's no need for guessing.

1. To give an opportunity for a less insane and dangerous government, to the Western world, the US and its close allies, to rise and to bring stability to the region. It's no coincidence that the US started setting things up for this attack right when the Iranian protests were raging. Trump spent a good portion of his speech today making it crystal clear to the Iranian people that now is the time, and the only time to rise up. If you don't do this now you're fucked because we're not sending boots to the ground. We are not coming in to save you, we're only giving a helping hand. He couldn't have been more clear on this messaging.

2. To hinder Iran's advancements towards being able to make nukes, by killing their leaders and damaging their infrastructure.

If for some reason the Iranian people fail to overthrow the current government, the second goal is still being achieved and the message is still being sent, by proving that the previous bombing wasn't just a one-off thing.

In other words: The yearly bombings will continue until morale improves you stop trying to make nukes. We won't let you, no matter what.
