I'm 100% certain Phil hates Khet and wants to get rid of her, but he won't do it unless he has a sure thing lined up since having a soulmaid is part of his mature adult identity now. I could too, but he lied about it twice. In the call he says she's right there, then the next day it was "I was in the awfice" and he refused to engage with people calling him out. Now running from the truth isn't abnormal, but why lie? People noticed it sounded like she was talking from the doorway but it's not like that was a proven fact, why not just keep going with "she was right next to me"? Why change the story?

To me it doesn't sound like she was next to him when she talks. It sounds like she came into whatever room he was in. Especially given the "uh oh", that sounds like he heard something that tipped him off that he had woken her up, not that he noticed her stirring next to him. My current theory is that she's in the next room and heard him through the walls, because he wasn't talking that loudly and somehow she still heard him. But idk, it's all very odd.
