Arizona investigators probing the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, said Monday they believe she was taken from her home against her will.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously described Guthrie’s home as a “crime scene.” She was taken “possibly in the middle of the night and that includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” his department said in a statement.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday night in her home outside Tucson. She has limited mobility and needs to take medication daily or “it could be fatal,” Nanos said.

She had no cognitive issues, and her disappearance was not linked to dementia, he added, describing her as being “of sound mind” and “sharp as a tack.”

Guthrie’s family reported her missing around noon Sunday, setting off a search-and-rescue mission that included trained personnel, drones, an airplane, a helicopter, volunteers and search-and-rescue dogs lent from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“I think she was abducted,” Nanos told NBC News. “When you’re taken from your bed and you don’t want to go somewhere, that’s an abduction.”
Nanos said officials believe Guthrie was harmed when she was taken, but they did not provide other details.

“We know she was harmed at the home, but we don’t know to what extent,” he said.

Nanos has not provided additional details about the investigation. He has said investigators “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us” but did not offer specifics.

The community was devastated by her disappearance, Nanos told NBC News.

“This is just really sad for our community,” he said. “Savannah is family to us. She’s a big part of this community. Her family is devastated, the entire family. And you know, this just doesn’t happen in Tucson.”

Nanos confirmed that law enforcement officials are reviewing video from cameras at Guthrie’s home, where she lives alone and employs staff members. He urged neighbors to “go through their Ring cameras.”

Nanos asked members of the public to contact the sheriff’s office at 520-351-4900 if they have information about the case.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said.

Guthrie is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Her family last saw her at home around 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Saturday. She “is not in good physical health,” Nanos said.

Authorities are not aware of any threats against Savannah Guthrie, who is in Arizona. The FBI is aware of the case.

Monday’s broadcast of the “TODAY” show opened with an update on Guthrie, with co-anchor Craig Melvin calling it a “deeply personal story for us.”

In a statement reported on the air, Savannah Guthrie said in part: “I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.”

“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said in her statement. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at: 520-351-4900.”

Savannah Guthrie has frequently discussed her close relationship with her mother over the years.
“She loves us, her family, fiercely, and her selflessness and sacrifice for us, her steadfastness and her unmovable confidence, is the reason any of us grew up to do anything,” Savannah Guthrie said in a 2022 tribute to her mother on her 80th birthday.

In a Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram in 2024, Savannah Guthrie described her mother as “God’s first, best and most important gift to me.”

Guthrie’s father, Charles Guthrie, died when she was 16. She is one of three children.

Place your bets, now.

Yes. Any theories? I go back and forth in my head about what may have happened and the motive, but nothing makes sense.
At this point nothing is off the table which is why I think it's such a compelling story. There are so many weird details. I could see it being a cartel kidnapping and the demand letter is real. I could see it being a bizarre cascade of coincidences and Nancy did in fact just have a stroke and wander off into the desert after injuring herself in the house. Maybe the brother in law is involved. Maybe Savannah is involved. Who the fuck knows?

Hot of the presses, the siblings just released a video of themselves, seemingly in prayer, with Savannah saying they'll pay the ransom. Maybe starting an FBI sting?

Latest video as mentioned by A Sentient Cloud. I'm guessing she's dead. "We received your message and we understand." With Angie's pained expression as Savannah says this, probably saying she understands their mom is dead. "...Celebrate with her" celebrate her life, and states that this is the only way they'll have peace. Their mom's body is very valuable to them and they'll pay for it. I really hope I'm wrong, but it's not sounding good.

FBI is definitely involved in scripting these videos. It's why people noticed the similarities with the Silence of the Lambs hostage video; the FBI consulted on that movie.

Is anyone else surprised to see how much media coverage this is getting? I hope she's found safe and all but they have been giving this story hours upon hours. I have read several stories of missing people and they usually only get local attention. A major news site might put up an article or two and a channel might give slight airtime but nothing like this. If any of us disappeared would the media give a crap?
You know why. We're all holding our breath to find out if the killer was a family member, like in the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife, and will be quietly relegated from front page news to TMZ gossip rags after a while, or whether it's an illegal with some sort of previous criminal history, which will start a civil firestorm.

We want to know, is Nancy Guthrie an unfortunate victim of domestic violence and murder, so sad, such a tragedy, lost a good one~
OR
Is Nancy Guthrie going to be a martyr to the culture war and kick off civil dissent. Is Nancy Guthrie's name going on the list under Laken Riley's. Will her death turn into a political circus.

Edit: it looks like "too bad, so sad, family violence" is on the menu. They're searching Annie Guthrie and her husband Tommaso's house right now on JLR Investigates: https://www.youtube.com/live/0iMVNOLLXx4

It's very boring to watch.

I'm starting to think she died day one and whoever took her ditched the body somewhere and high-tailed it out of town. The ransom notes to the media were just a way to distract everyone while the kidnapper made his escape.
This makes a lot of sense actually. She’s the perfect target for some psycho who goons off to media attention.

Remember when audio leaked of Amy Rorbach (cheating scandal notwithstanding) complaining about ABC killing the Epstein story? My understanding is that Savannah was one of the first to either break the story or interview the victims.

Just a conspiracy theory but the Epstein thing might be related to her mom vanishing.

Nothing about any of this adds up, but something’s been bugging me. The news said her family initially knew something was wrong when people grew concerned when Nancy failed to show up for church the next day, but the attendees at the church she belongs to say she hasn’t attended in person for years now.

She attended online. A lot of churches kept their online services around after Covid restrictions lifted. Could be a moderator noticed she was missing. It looks like they have chat during services.

Ashley Banfield said there’s no way for the church to record who shows up for the online church services. But ok, they have a chat. IDK how much an 84 year old woman knows about online chat, though I guess it’s possible, though generally not something I’d imagine would trigger alarm. Calling the family to ask if everything’s ok because an 84 year old woman wasn’t in the online chat this morning? Idk. It’s weird to me. Something’s not right here.

What kidnappers would want Bitcoin, a traceable crypto, as opposed to plenty of better crypto ransom options?
Bitcoin is "traceable" in terms of you being able to tell which address it goes to. But because its the largest/first cryptocurrency its also definitely possible to send it through mixing services and also dexes to turn it into something else and then turn it into something else again. By the time it has moved a few times and legal complaints have been sent its gone. This is a frequent problem with mega hacks and its really difficult to pin down crypto if someone knows what they're doing.

The biggest property is that it is permissionless so regardless of what happens it can be sent almost anywhere at anytime.

So asking for Bitcoin is either a super big brain move or a super small brain move depending on who you ask.

The crime is right in a sort of valley between 'obviously professionals' and 'obviously retards'. Someone smart enough to plan it out might've also considered kidnapping is a FEDERAL offense and brings massive scrutiny down on the area. I don't see cartels kidnapping a random lady, or worse, a lady with a high-profile daughter who can put the heat on them. The footsoldiers might be dumb but somewhere there's a boss who has to look over and sign off on the plan. How do they expect to get the money without getting nabbed? On the other hand, if the SIL wants to bump off the old lady for inheritance, he'd have to realize that he'd be suspect number one, and why complicate a contract hit by asking the hitman to remove the body?
This would require rational thinking and problem solving that, if these people had there wouldn't've been a hit or kidnapping in the first place and literally any other solution would have been come to before it.

That is.... eerily uncanny.
It's not that weird. Both the real woman and the character have been informed by experts on human psychology on how to word their statements.

"Talk to her and you'll see" humanizes the woman to her captors so, if she's alive, they're less likely to kill her. Or, if she's dead, might get one of them in the conscience.

I hope she's somehow alive and they all get gunned down.

If watching too many true crime YouTube interrogation videos has taught me anything it's that there's never a kidnapper. There's never a home invasion gone wrong. It's always a family member who thinks their master plan of murdering Grandma and blaming it on a kidnapper or robber is the perfect crime.
