That town was pretty much all white (with a smattering of blacks and Mexicans) and solidly middle class back in the 70's; then the hard-core hispanics started moving in and essentially took over. By the mid-80's they had to install metal detectors at what used to be East High School (back when there were two campuses - East being the campus where the rough kids went). Coincidentally it was the first year whites were a minority at the school. By that point racial fights and campus rivalry had already taken a life so this new dimension of a flood of Mexicans was NOT helping matters.

Probably for the best to close down the East campus to try to quell some of the intercity rivalry, but the forced integration between the two very different student bodies would have been interesting to see (I was long gone by then thank God). The city is a good case study on what unfettered immigration happens to a perfectly cromulent lakeside town. Sad to see.
