Richmond was partially burnt down by the Confederacy to prevent the Union from getting any sorts of spoils (warehouses were destroyed, tobacco was torched and documents were burnt) in 1865. Charleston had a massive fire in 1861 and apparently was subject to a bombardment that began in late 1863 continued on and off for 587 days.

How could a city with many thousands of residents be destroyed if not through the means that was reported. If it wasn't destroyed, then how could nobody have caught on? The people who lived there certainly would have taken note of reports about their city being destroyed when it never was. And if it was destroyed through some other means, than again people who experienced the destruction would have noticed the discrepancy.
