This is part of it but in my experience many social events went from bars to house parties. This might be because of crime, or covid, or prices. When you're at someone's house it's a lot easier to smoke weed then at a public venue. Weed is extremely cheap compared to alcohol, even in states without legalization. You can also point to large numbers of songs going from being about drinking to being about doing illegal drugs, especially weed.

Roughly a decade ago that dam finally broke and now there are constant studies coming out telling us that "Yes, that flower does contain something that will lower your blood pressure" or "Yes, that mushroom does have stuff that can cure some condition" or "Yes, Chinese water snake oil is high in omega-3s and would help with a lot of common conditions" and so on.
