You can watch this process happening in the movies themselves, in the 30s and 40s it's still very popular to depict gatherings with spontaneous music and dancing performed by the guests (although carefully choreographed), but those movies are depicting what they themselves are dismantling. Looney Tunes was partially conceived as a way to sell sheet music from the Warner Bros music library. I find The Strawberry Blonde from 1941 very interesting in that regard because it's nostalgia bait for the 1900s, and part of what they're nostalgic for is parts of the culture of live music which have already started to drop out.

I don't think conceptualizing what happened as the entertainment industry doing it to America (or the whole world) is helpful. America did it to ourselves. And we bounce back all the time, a huge positive part of mostly gross hippie 60s youth culture was a return to American roots music and playing your own instruments and making your own fun.

We live in the world we live in with the technology that we have and we have to make our life here, part of living the good life with mass comunication technology is practicing discernment, there's no other way. And also we're huge hypocrites posting on the internet about this anyway!
