Unfortunately, I'm sure we both know that's not the case now. Trumps spawn and cronies are getting all the high stake government contracts. Numerous powerful technology firm donated to build his garbage diddy dungeon. The average American politician would have been EXECUTED under CPC rule, and rightfully so.
There's been some truly disastrous SCOTUS rulings which have demolished the independence of the bureaucracy. People point to Unitary Executive Theory a lot, which is an obvious problem, but I think it goes back even further, to the big lie during the Nixon administration of three co-equal branches of government. It is obvious that Congress was supposed to have primacy over the other two, but we are in a world now where, unfortunately, so much power has been ceded to the executive branch that it will be extremely hard to claw it back.
It's an issue I've pointed out before, that each president has made a larger and larger hammer, and Trump has taken it, in my opinion, to its logical conclusion, and there is very little incentive for whoever comes next, Republican on Democrat, to make that hammer smaller or to not use it to kneecap whoever they dislike. We are in a very dangerous spot. Not to mention that having an executive branch run like this discourages top talent from pursuing government jobs which, generally, have longer hours, shittier wages and conditions, and make up for it only with benefits and the knowledge you're serving your country. I fear the brain drain the government is experiencing could be irreversible.
Anyway, it's certainly stressful to be a cop in America. Pilots are regularly screened because the lives of hundreds are right behind a steering wheel. Why don't we do the same with cops? That's why flying is the safest and around pigs, never relax.
There's a real problem with mental health, not just in cops, but in public servants in general. There's no reason we shouldn't monitor public servants for signs of stress and the beginnings of cracks. Even this situation, I don't know if it played a role, but he was dragged by a car last year in an incident. I personally think that absolutely could've played a role in his decision to shoot, that unresolved fear from the previous incident. If we made law enforcement less of a gung ho, "macho" job and instead treated it like the public service it is, and worked to actually train and take care of them properly, I think we would see both higher quality applicants and more responsible officers.
This makes his disrespectful behavior to politicians who were veterans even worse.

The Vietnam veterans in my family despise the man for this reason alone. I'm always very hesitant to disparage someone's military service and I find his attacks on veterans despicable. I was never particularly fond of Kerry but I similarly despised the attempts to drag his service, despite the fact he was a purple heart recipient. These smear campaigns smell very similar.
