It does vary quite a lot, here in Finland I've mostly heard of Lutherans (weirdly enough) ramble about a hell of those "nine circles/sections", or different punishments for different sins, whereas my Orthodox buddies have described hell more as a "state of mind, absence of God". This does of course vary further, I guess everyone hold quite unique views of it.

To the best of my knowledge, Hell being referred to as a fiery place is exclusive to the New Testament (Or rather, Hell is being consigned there). In the old testament, it's just the realm of the dead. But it's also called the second death in the NT, as well as "everlasting destruction", so it seems that Hell is more or less the permanent destruction of the soul.

He mainly invented it to put people he disliked into various circles of it.
