i don't think politicians read any of these letters sent to them by random guys. maybe if it's coming from a business or organisation, but not from private nobodies.

Politicians literally do nothing all day. Their staff read the letters and compile lists of shit they should vaguely care about. The letter will be most likely opened and at least skimmed over. It won't change the opinion of the person reading it, but it'll increment a number in some spreadsheet.

If you're just as lazy as a politician and have resolved to do absolutely nothing, then at least send an e-mail. It's not as impactful but it's better than posting here.

It depends on the politician's preferences and how high up they are, but I've heard second hand accounts that it often works like this at the governor/congressional level:

- Staffers will read the letters and create a daily summary, which includes total letters received, tallies of issues mentioned and for/against, as well as any notable quotes.

- The daily mail summary along with any notable or interesting letters usually go to the office manager or chief of staff. Reviewing the mail report with the politician is usually either a standing item in the staff meeting, or it's delivered to the politician for review as part of their daily correspondence.

- They say some politicians like to review the entire bundle of mail, but that's probably more likely with lower level local positions than national ones.
