It all starts with Hamilton’s 10th anniversary year, which has been enormous financially and culturally. Between tours, special performances, merchandise, and anniversary events, the show reportedly cleared close to a billion dollars in revenue tied to the celebration alone. As part of that anniversary push, Hamilton had a planned engagement with the Kennedy Center that was framed as a unifying cultural moment.
After Kamala Harris’s loss, that deal fell apart. Rather than quietly stepping away, the Hamilton team withdrew from the Kennedy Center and publicly explained their reasoning before the Center itself issued a statement. That public framing mattered. It made the withdrawal feel political, whether or not that was the stated intention.
The response was immediate. Figures associated with Trump accused Hamilton of being sore losers and of politicizing an arts space that they argued should remain neutral. Some Republican fans of the musical also lashed out at the show were basically drawing its line in the sand.
What escalated things was the domino effect. Once Hamilton pulled out, other productions that had no immediate plans or leverage saw an opportunity. They followed suit, withdrawing or distancing themselves in ways that felt less ideological and more performative. That transformed what could have been a contained controversy into a prolonged public standoff.
