Anyone who genuinely expects New York City to become a full blown Soviet-style communist dictatorship is retarded, both left and right. People are putting the cart WAY before the fucking horse. At "worst" he'll be as "socialist" as AOC or Bernie, progressive democrats who say a lot of nice sounding things to their bases, but are ultimately limited by the realities of holding power in a massive bureaucratic system.

Bernie Sanders in 2016 sold a lot of young people on the left on the Green Lantern Theory of Electoral Politics, where if you just believe really really hard, you can get literally anything done super easily, it's just that the meanie evil establishment doesn't want to believe hard enough.

DSA Leftists believe that the Democrats lost in 2024 because the average voter was actually secretly craving a far-left candidate, and that Kamala Harris was "too conservative"/right-wing because she wasn't outright calling for the dismantling of capitalism or promising to bomb Israel to #FreePalestine.

The same DSA leftists relishing in the idea that this mayoral election is going to be the way they get the Democratic party establishment to finally bend the knee and kiss the ring to the socialist future they dream of, are going to be the same people calling him a sellout terrorist war criminal Zionist LIBERAL (the worst thing he could possibly be to them) once they realize that actually wielding the levers of power isn't as easy as waving a magic wand and fixing everything.

Zohran Mamdani is basically running a slam dunk campaign in a slam dunk election. He's a Democratic Socialist running in one of the bluest states in the whole country (Harris/Dems+22), in one of the bluest cities in the country (Harris+33), against two one disgraced, despised conservative Democrats with criminal charges/allegations, after a year of Democrats rallying in off-season elections after losing the presidency, house, and senate to Donald Trump, with Curtis Sliwa splitting the vote against him. He wins by having a (D) next to his name by default.

The idea that the DSA left has that this is something that can easily be exported across the country or be viable in a national election is laughable.

I do hope he can accomplish some things like universal childcare, free buses, and reducing the cost of living (lol) but time will tell. It's a lot easier to simply say the buzzwords "Medicare for All", "Free Palestine", etc that makes leftists cream themselves when you're a candidate who's never had to prove themselves, it's another thing to actually have to act on those promises.

The city first of all is way too corrupt, there's too much bureaucracy to get anything done, and a whole lot of people. If Mamdani does win, his ideas are not going to work due to the amount of forces working against him, and they will be required to be watered down.

He doesn't have anywhere near the power to deliver half of what he promises, but he can fuck up just enough to send the city spiraling. He's got at least one of the DAs on his side (I do not believe Alvin Bragg is going to leave the DA's office short of collapsing over a third cheeseburger one happy day), and he can fuck with the cops enough for the city to see quadruple digit homicide rates again.

I don't know how long you've lived in NYC, but Sliwa was widely perceived as a clown even when I was a kid, and that's over 30 years ago now. I also doubt he has anything like the administrative chops to deal with the city bureaucracy (neither does Mamdani, but no one cares about that at this point). There are plenty of R's who won't pull the lever for him -- I didn't in 2021, although I knew I was leaving a few months later, so I didn't bother voting for a bunch of reasons.

The massive turnout is interesting, though. I do wonder if we're seeing a Cuomo upset.

I had some NYPD buddies who perfectly predicted what a disaster he was going to be, based solely on his behavior on the force. To play devil's advocate, the rise of online trading has made the NYSE less of a critical point of failure than it used to be -- even 9/11 only shut it down for a week, and that was almost 25 years ago. By the way, the guy who was responsible for the 9/11 stock exchange miracle recovery, Dick Grasso, was subsequently prosecuted by AG Eliot Spitzer on what were extremely flimsy charges (and, according to some arguments, noncriminal in any event).
