I don't believe this is indicative of his morality; it is hell on earth dealing with a truly mentally ill person, watching them decay without any desire to help themselves, all the while being pushed away. I've had a similar friendship in my youth, I'll briefly elaborate with an anecdote.
In high-school, I befriended a loner because he came up to me and asked "do ya like Death Grips?" He was a weird fella, but outside of some social friction, he was tolerable to be around. After a few months of relative stability he became emotionally unhinged, lying frequently, and attempting to act like a schizophrenic/anime character when we weren't giving him constant attention. This hit its first peak when, without knowing of his affliction, I punched him off our Minecraft mountain because we had a "no gays allowed" policy; he started screaming in frantic shouts turned on his webcam and stuck an unwound paperclip in his eye, dancing his gaze around to ensure that we all had a good glimpse at its fixed position in his scelara, all the while angrily shouting "[REDACTED], YOU MADE ME FUCKING DO THIS!"
The next few years after this incident were spent dancing around eggshells, one minor mistake in phrasing and he'd jump straight back to self-harm. Over the span of six-months he ripped out two molars, once because I called one of his favourite albums "cringe and gay," another because no one believed that he shagged a broad. Our relationship occasionally, would return to the previous state, only to be dragged in a fury back to the hell, his anger produced. Due to the fact that it was impossible to communicate normally with him we made two chats, one with him where we could talk about things safely that were relevant to him, another where we could speak freely. This alienation wasn't produced out of malice, but because we knew if we weren't careful he'd go to hurt himself. We'd spend the occasional night playing DnD, or going out to the woods, but it was always a 50/50 if he'd lose his mind. The nights we went to his house and he was normal were fantastic because we could be his friend, when he was in a breakdown we were helpless beyond watching his wrath.
As the years waned, people couldn't deal with his self-destruction any longer, there was nothing we could do to "fix" him, and legally we couldn't force him to get better besides the occassional police-check. After he lied about a girl raping him, we decided enough was enough, we had done all we could to be present in his life without resolve, and it would be better, at least for us, to move on.
You cannot force someone to improve or seek help, nor can you maintain your friendship when someone goes off the deep end. At some point you have to quit.
Sorry for the long-post, figured I could add a perspective.
