Movie Sequels That Change The Genre

I've been thinking about this after reading up about M3GAN 2.0.
The 1st one was a Child's Play rip off but with AI and a girl.
Cool, that's a potential for a silly slasher franchise.
But then, Jason Blum had the genius idea that the killer girlbot is actually a superhero and turned the sequel into a sci fi spy action adventure movie like Mission Impossible.
Fucking brilliant.
Props that he made a relatively exciting action movie for $25 million, dude knows how to budget shit.

Then there's The Purge franchise.
1st one is a shitty home invasion movie a'la The Strangers just with a dumb gimmick of a lawless Purge Day to justify the police not showing up.
The sequels however fully embraced the concept and got Frank Grillo to play basically the fucking Punisher and walk around the city shooting motherfuckers in the face.
It's actually a lot of fun.

No, Aliens doesn't count since the genre is too close to the original, I think, and also, it's too obvious.

Kind of the same thing with Alien, the first one was a horror movie, the second was more of an action flick.

SAW, kinda. We went from low budget indie horror set in a tiny selection of locations to some pseudo conspiracy "policeman was a killer all along" nonsense. I fell off the SAW wagon after I think 4 or 5, and it may have spiraled (heh, gettit, because Spiral is a movie too) further from the original concept.
I still really like the first, and maybe the second. High art, it is not, but a guilty pleasure of mine.

The Raid 2. Both are amazing but the hand to hand stuff in 2 is absolutely wild. The first one was more gun focused.

I guess the Rambo movies, First Blood was a drama with action scenes about a Vietnam vet hassled by the man in bumfuck Washington while the sequels were straight action.

I feel the same way about Child's Play. The early ones are definitely a bit more serious than later ones. They really embraced how goofy the concept was in the later ones, especially the Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky.

Child's Play 2 had a lot of self-aware satirical moments and a generally goofy tone to it.

Movies? That art form is so over. Same goes for shows. The entire "industry" needed north of $1.5B in 2024 in subsidies and indirect subsidies. Younger Gen Z and Alpha don't watch movies or shows and half of Millenials don't pay for it.

Completely agree. It's pretty much the gold standard of genre swapping.

I haven't watched an MCU film in years and even then checked out the franchise by the time I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or Doctor Strange, but it's very jarring how Iron Man is grounded in reality compared to The Avengers with the backdrop of Bush-era Iraq War. I'm not sure if the change over time was because of marketing potential, retards trying to fit their pet project into the Marvel mold, or some other reason, but Iron Man (2008) feels closer to the Raimi Spider-Man movies, not just in time but the whole way the movies were built.
