How the fuck are the coasts going to supply them with supplies and manpower? Chicago sits mostly alone in the middle of the country.

You can bomb strategic targets in the city during a siege with modern aircraft. The point of a siege is psychological warfare and making the people desperate and terrorized enough to surrender. Timur the Lame would have pyramids of skulls built outside of cities to terrorize them into surrendering and in many cases they would. People are more susceptible to terrorism than you think. The illinois national guard would probably side with the rest of the military, most of them are from those red counties outside of cook county.
