Disaster Requirements for SNAP benefits set to change; Catholic Charities expresses concerns - According to recent data 505,500 Nevadans use SNAP benefits, which is about 15% of the state’s population. There will also no longer be exceptions that allow for veterans, people who are homeless, or young adults who have aged out of foster care.

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - As a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, there are changes coming to people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits.

“Lots of changes coming to federal benefit programs, including SNAP,” said Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada CEO Marie Baxter. “Largely having to do with who was exempt from needing to meet work requirements.”

According to recent data 505,500 Nevadans use SNAP benefits, which is about 15% of the state’s population.

While seniors are still SNAP eligible, many will not be if they don’t meet work requirements. The bill requires able bodied adults to work or volunteers 80 hours per month and document that every 6 months to continue receiving benefits.

There will also no longer be exceptions that allow for veterans, people who are homeless, or young adults who have aged out of foster care.

Baxter says her biggest worry is that people don’t know about these changes, and even though they are eligible for the benefits, they might not take the necessary steps to make sure they receive them.

“November 1st the notification period for people on SNAP. December 1st is when these different rules really go into effect,” Baxter said.

Baxter says her second biggest concern is that this will result in a lot more people coming into the food pantry, making the supply more challenging.

I was worried they were being cut off entirely.
But it’s literally just the work exemption?

You don’t even have to work, you can volunteer, and you don’t even have to do that if you’re crippled.

Something just came to me, did the BBB change exemptions for people in Drug and Alcohol programs? Because I know they have been exempt before. So would all these able bodied people just have to become addicts to avoid work?

Homeless bums should get jobs, hot take. 80 hours a month is 20 hours a week. Not hard
I do 52 a week on night shifts. I get paid great for this (suits me to a T,my sleep pattern is fucked). I got my current job after going to a local industrial park with 25 copies of my resume printed off with a cover letter, signed, in envelopes.

There's jobs there if you're willing to look and ask.

Fucking over veterans and foster care kids in an austerity measure that doesn't even perform it's stated goal of austerity is unconscionable regardless of what economic ideology you adhere to. Advocates of more spending should hate it for obvious reasons while fiscal conservatives should hate it because the BBB only worsens the budget deficit, making it entirely pointless.

or young adults who have aged out of foster care.

That’s fucked. One of the truly most vulnerable populations are homeless kids and foster kids who age out of being considered legally “a kid”. They have no support since they’re estranged from their bio family and unless you have an awesome foster family willing to support you after they stop getting gibs from the state… you’re completely on your own.

it's extremely hard to employ homeless bums

homeless bums have an army of people who are salivating to make money suing you if you don't treat em like precious items that you should be honored to let do heavily supervised work that can't be around cash, children, or anything breakable

did you really not think this through? I'm sure you have shit around the house and yard a homeless bum could do. are you going to let a homeless bum in your house or yard? but a business owner somehow totally can.

When they can't eat, they won't be talking to lawyers. They will put the fries in the bag. Your argument is dripping with cope.

and yours is middle school debate team tier

the issue is not the homeless bums. the issue is that the poor are a gold mine. there is a gigantic wellfunded wellorganized structure of social workers, lawyers, agribusiness lobbyists, and megalocorps who are working together. you cannot get from the current situation to "lol let em starve and they'll come around" because the issue is not the actions that the bums take, the issue is the incentive structure which exists to make these people too expensive to employ.

again think it through for 15 seconds - it is incredibly hazardous on multiple levels to simply pay marginal people to do tasks for you. if you have the capacity to pay them, you have too much to lose.

saying "they'll put the fries in the bag" is the exact equivalent of "show up in person with your resume and a firm handshake." when the changes really start happening, the people who will be putting the fries in the bag first will be *unemployed social workers* not bums. who would you rather employ?

Nigga McDonald's requires you are alive and breathing. Not a fucking degree. Shut up you libtard faggot.

As far as I can tell the exemptions to the work requirements for the people going through a drug program are still in place. These programs include phone apps like Affect where you ‘get clean’ over video meetings.

So if these people worried about the new requirements want to they could just claim they are an addict lol

There are massive systemic issues if 15/20% of any state are on public assistance, that's failing civilization level shit.
think about it this way: there would be more people who should qualify for snap but are restricted due to arbitrary finance limits.
Homeless bums should get jobs, hot take. 80 hours a month is 20 hours a week. Not hard
most bums are too fucked to hold a job and you wouldn't want to work around them. they should be dumped and trapped into the west coast states. barring that re open mental institutions and dump the worse junkies into prison.

I get where people are coming from when they want social assistance reform and Canada has similar issues with welfare. The biggest issue I see with it is that a lot of the people on these programs are not people you want working in any business. I have family who owns a small store and have applied for government grants that get these sort of people into the workforce, I suppose long enough to draw EI. Every single time you end up with someone who needs a second employee to watch them because they are lazy or untrustworthy or combative or mentally ill or a combination. They negatively impact the business. They've come to work drunk or high or so unkempt they had to be sent home because they stank up the space. One time they had a grant for an autistic person who literally laughed in the face of a customer and walked away when asked a simple question.

It's the same issues with homelessness. Everyone wants change but nobody wants to address the elephant in the room that the chronically homeless cannot just be thrown into housing because most of them are severely mentally ill and would destroy wherever you place them.
some of these people are schizophrenics who refuse to take their meds. others are psychopathic who have no place in society, and a whole bunch had their brains fried from drugs. at some point, we'll have to make them wards of the state and section them off somewhere because they are insane. it's not the 90's or 2000s, the motif that the homeless are regular joes down on their luck isn't true anymore. i swear the number of chronically homeless is 50-60% of the homeless population now. in the 2000s it was supposedly around 10%.

another issue that nobody has pointed out yet is that this supports the foster care -> prostitution pipeline

in seattle tacoma and portland pimps recruit directly from group homes, absolutely nothing is done about it

i've been thinking about this topic a lot lately. forgive my autism but you've got me writing a tangent.

my parents are retarded, and i say that without an ounce of affection or acid. but even my mother staunchly believes that it makes no sense for anyone in the US to be homeless. i told her, "homelessness is a choice that these people consciously make." spend one week in a shithole ghetto (like Cincinnati and Dayton in my home state of Ohio) and you'll see. plenty of people never got a fighting chance in life, and that is tragic, but there are far more who are capable of improving themselves and the environment and actively choose not to. altogether, none of them will choose to stop doing drugs, which is why they will never qualify for benefits and services and why you'll have those obnoxious fucks holding up lines in stores to count a thousand coins in their ziplock baggie for their next can of bud ice.

recently, i've thought to myself, "what do you actually do with those people?" do we wait for them all to die, or do we involuntarily commit them until they change their behaviors, or do we disappear them? homeless bums with zero education who have grown up like wild and feral animals who beat pregnant women are the norm in every rundown slum. Christian compassion just seems ill-suited to this level of destitution, because it's something that they have consciously embraced as a way of life. giving to the needy and the hungry was always one thing but now it's hip and cool and profitable to grift off being a worthless freeloading loser, so should we still have compassion for those people? trying to work further for these violent, uncooperative bums hurts honest people instead. laws are broken or ignored for them while enforced harshly against functional, ordinary men and women.

obviously, i know that we should choose compassion and real empathy, and do our best to convert others. if the people's hearts are turned, the situation will change and God will grow close again. but i think we'll find that a lot of people are beyond reach, therefore we should save our compassion and empathy for our neighbors who suffer just as much as the rest of us for the decisions that the homeless make. these people will just make life worse for everyone around them because they have learned to be helpless but are also choosing to ignore opportunities. i've spoken to store managers who've offered jobs to or even hired the destitute from their neighborhoods to give them a better shot at life, to give them a chance to earn some money and do something with themselves.

none of them showed up for work. not even a young woman who got herself pregnant, who also had managed to avoid drug habits. they want to exist like this.

that woman, btw, gets beaten by multiple men every week (still pregnant).

these people know that society will not truly, truly punish them in some permanent fashion for their lifestyle and their criminal activities. and we can't exile them from our proverbial village because they just move right over to the next township, city, state, whatever. kicking the can down the road doesn't work because they move like migratory animals and pal around the places they can steal from where the police are useless and build camps under highway bridges.

Welp--WELP--No help for it (throws up my arms)

Ya just GOTTA let these fucking cur dogs and trash bags live off infinity welfare. Can't be helped. NOTHING can be done.

SHUT.

THE.

ENTIRE.

FUCK.

UP.

YES, there will be hiccups. NO, booboo, you DO NOT get to use hiccups as an EXCUSE to continue, stagnate, and DO NO REFORM. These people can do one of two options:

1. CHANGE

2. Go to jail/be homeless/die/institutionalized for life

You DON'T give them the out, or excuse, to get out of the social contract because... reasons. They may not believe in the social contract, but IT believes in THEM. Straighten up, fly right, or fucking STARVE.

The FUCK BUCKET is EMPTY.

This is one of those threads where you can tell who's a mindless ideologue and who is capable of critical reasoning pretty clearly.

This is going to be a disaster and I'm here for it :story:
There are massive systemic issues if 15/20% of any state are on public assistance, that's failing civilization level shit.
Well if we are generous and assume a twentieth of those are people who for one reason or another fall within all circles on the Venn diagram of 'will be drastically impacted by this', 'able bodied', and 'cannot meet the requirements because of some issue or another', it'd still be a disaster of a policy change given that there hasn't been enough action on removing legal and illegal immigrant laborers from the workforce.

I'll remind everyone that the agricultural workforce, which has suspiciously been left alone by the Trump admin, is still about 40% illegal laborers.

Worth mentioning though that it'd probably still be a disaster but at least the excuse of not being able to find work would be completely laughable if they went after the major illegal labor rackets.

Nigga McDonald's requires you are alive and breathing. Not a fucking degree. Shut up you libtard faggot.
no it requires you to remember the 5 steps in making french fries. i expect the seniors won't have the strength to do it for prolonged time and bums won't have the brain capacity to remember it. there are always exceptions but bums are bums because they have other issues than being lazy. A lot of the retards i deal with expect to get fired to they can collect unemployment, they know the unemployment system and can get free lawyers to help them win on appeal. and then there are people who think they don't have to answer to anyone for any reason. a lot of these bums are crazy and unemployable; these aren't the criminally minded either. there are people out there where you have to teach them the basics of their job everyday because they don't have the intellect to remember it after they sleep.

The FUCK BUCKET is EMPTY.
this is why we have a societal collapse.

Fucking excuses. Work will solve a lot of these losers problems. The NEETS shall work or starve
