I'm going to take this opportunity to try to explain because while I was catching up I saw someone else citing this poll as if it fucking meant anything. I'm pasting in the image again for reference, please do blow it up and study it carefully! Come back to it often, the details are important (I wrote this post with it inserted full size, then switched it to thumbnail before posting so I could look back at it easily):
Ok, so the second question is fine. That's a true binary, either Trump exceeded or is within the bounds of his authority. HOWEVER, the order you ask questions matters, so let's come back to it afterwards (I'm not
certain in what order they asked the questions, but everything I'm seeing implies these two are linked and were asked in this order).
The first question forces a frame onto things. In a vacuum, there's nothing wrong with asking people if they think Trump is acting like a fascist and/or dictator. There's nothing wrong with asking whether he is a strong president. But...in what fucking world are those the only two choices? This forces the respondent to assume Trump is a strong, active figure, then asks for a value judgment. So yeah, Democrats overwhelmingly chose to call Trump a fascist dictator BECAUSE THEIR ONLY ALTERNATIVE WAS DESCRIBING HIM AS A STRONG PRESIDENT! Between two choices, the people of the opposite party who did not vote for and do not like Donald Trump picked the one that is not flattering to him; what a surprise!
Here's an alternate version you could ask around here, you could imagine which doomers might pick the first option: "Do you think Donald Trump is a weak president, or is he just cautious about waiting for feedback from the electorate when implementing his policies?" There, now the same 80% of Democrats who just called him a dictator will call him weak. It's just garbage.
Now, the insidious part; you can dismiss calling him a fascist as TDS, it's raising the temperature and driving people away from seeing consensus, but...what the fuck do you expect from the media at this point? No, the really bad part is that the first question primes you to answer a certain way on the second one. You just forced a bunch of Democrats to call Trump a dictator so they could avoid saying something else about him that sounds too nice. How the fuck are they then
not going to tell you he has exceeded his authority? And now you have two separate headlines: ragebait for the GOP that a supermajority of their enemies are calling Trump a fascist (and they know people are sensitive to that right now); and for the Dems and policymakers, manufactured consensus that over half the country sees Trump as having exceeded his authority. But ask yourself: if you substituted
my question, forced people to answer it first, then asked them the second question, do you think that could have any effect on the outcomes of the second question? Remember, we're not changing the wording of the "exceeded his authority" question at all! That question could absolutely be useful, so they fucked with it until it became just another bare approval measure!
That's how this shit works. That's why poll design is important, and yes they're doing this on purpose and they think you're morons.
