"Overly Obese" Body Sets Crematorium On Fire In Ohio

A crematorium went up in flames when the excessive fat from an “overly obese” body caused the pyre to burn too brightly, according to local reports.

The owner of the Hillside Chapel Crematory in Cincinnati says the conflagration started on Tuesday night when the fire engulfing the corpulent corpse got too hot and spread to some nearby containers.

“My operator was in the process of cremating remains and (the body) was overly obese and apparently it got a little hotter than the unit is supposed to get,” owner Don Catchen told WCPO Cincinnati.

“One of the cremation containers that we had close got caught on fire and that’s what burnt.”

Firefighters battled the blaze for two hours and managed to save the building from any serious damage, Catchen told the TV station.

Crematoriums are fairly fire-resistant by design.

“The containers that we use — that we have to place the remains in to cremate them — that’s the only thing that’s burnt,” he said.

This isn’t the first time a dead body’s extra weight has caused a fire.

A crematorium in Austria was gutted in 2012 when a 440-pound woman’s body blocked an air filter.

Actually, ran in to a similar problem at work once. Dude was a little over 1000 pounds and we could not find any funeral home in Ohio that would burn someone that big. My colleague and I proposed both options, but were informed that both are desecration of human remains.

You don't want to be around a guy who weighs half a ton when he gets sloshy.

this is actually really common; plenty of places refuse larger corpses because destroying a retort is a huge loss. it's odd that the news even bothered to cover this, maybe they're trying to warn fat people about why they might get turned down.

people in death services are already aware.

you can't cut em into manageable pieces, and human fat burns HOT.

The guy desecrated himself in life. What difference does it make in death.

Funerals are fucking expensive, I don't even want to think about what it cost the family for his casket. It's cheaper to be cremated.

problem is that they're unhealthy enough that the organs are useless- the heart deformed, liver shot. the skin usually has a host of infections but sometimes you can get a useful graft or two.

the eyes are usually good enough to donate, and long bone, possibly the marrow.

really you can't do a damn thing with them.

How can you be "overly" obese when obese is already the medical term for overweight? This reminds me of a similar thing that happened in Austria. A woman's corpse was massive and caused a grease fire in the crematorium. Both embalming and cremation are complicated with obese bodies, yet another reason water cremation/resomation should be legalized, beyond the environmental benefits it would be an easier way to deal with these fatties without using massive amounts of formaldehyde or burning down the whole damn crematory.

resomation/maceration are the best ideas, really, along with body farm donations (you have to donate to them in a different way than just saying yes on your driver's license though)

"overly" probably just meant "over the limit for that particular crematorium.
