It really is amazing too me how misunderstood the American Civil War is. Nobody today actually understands a god damn thing about what EITHER side was fighting about. The Union was just a bunch of hecking wholesome freedom fighters out too end slavery against the literal Aztec Empire that was the southern half of America. Meanwhile, the Southerners were totally hecking based and trad. standing up for their rights and the US Constitution as it was akshually envisioned . That or totally uneducated country hicks fighting for the rich man's slave. Take your pick.
This explanation of The Union cause of the war completely cheapens what was actually going on with the Northern States, while the latter for the confederacy massively oversimplifies what was going on in the south. The conflict was intensely multilayered and the people involved really did agonize over their decisions of what side too fight for, or whether they should fight at all.
Slavery itself was simply the subtext of the larger problem which boiled down too a profound disagreement on the nature of sovreignty and just what made an "American" an "American". Were Slaves "Americans" for example. Ironically, if you were too ask the average Union soldier, 9 times out of 10 they would have said NO. The Africans were NOT "Americans". The crime in the ideology of the Union during the war was Americans keeping slaves. Not Americans being kept AS Slaves. I have tried too explain this too people for years now it never seems to stick.
The fundamental disagreement was the Confederates did not believe they were Americans, and the Union believed the Confederates WERE Americans. The entire nexus of every dispute the led up too and prosecuted the civil war turns on this fundamental dispute that sits above every other argument be it over constitutional intent, states rights, slavery or free association.
Idiot bullshit like this proposed game makes me irrationally angry because its people who have no understanding of a thing that was actually very traumatic too the American nation, and is still too this day a badly healed over wound being so callously treated. As if every soldier that fought for General Lee were ravening monsters out too rape black women, while all the Union Boys on Sherman's march were liberating angels. The sort of over simplification an ignorant child makes.
