Jimmy Kimmel has never been funny though
None of those late night hosts have ever been funny, people only ever watched them to see the musical performances and because for decades it was the only way to see the personal and human side of whatever celebrity you were interested in. Now that we have the internet where nobody listens to corporate music and celebrities are annoying us with their garbage opinions and boring lives 24/7, late night has zero reason to exist. But there was a solid 15-ish years where young liberals got all of their news from parody news shows like Colbert and John Stewart, which is why every late night show turned into that, only shows with that format relied too long on a Democrat president, so now they’re just bitter old men yelling into a void.
The left cares so much about late night talk shows because they harken back to a time when the corporate media controlled everything. Bands were only famous after they appeared on Ed Sullivan, movies only did well after Johnny Carson interviewed the star, comedians only made it big after they did a set on David Letterman, it was all a deliberate way to control things. You only saw the people the leftist Hollywood wanted you to see and they only showed you a sanitized version that they deemed safe for the public. These shows told you what to like and what to think, and there was no internet to argue back. Right wing alternatives to this didn’t exist which lead people to believe that conservatives were either not popular, or not capable of being funny or good at creating content. This is now dead and people are finally seeing how awful these shows are.
Late night, which was original the “edgier content” is now more sanitized than a kid on xbox live, and streaming and YouTube have lead to faster, cheaper, and more interactive formats catered to specific niches. The firing of Colbert and Kimmel is so important to the left because it’s the sign that their near century long control over information and entertainment is officially dead
