Why would you rent a webserver?

For teamspeak2, ventrilo and roger wilco if you really want to get old school, all you need to do is double click the server executable amd give the clients your IP address. If you had a firewall you needed to open a port range or two, if you also had a router you needed to forward it to the host computer and if you were really advanced you got a free dns service for your dynamic IP.

I'd love for you to point out where I said that, because I didn't. I said that Discord is not searchable unless you're an admin, which means it ALREADY IS SEARCHABLE BUT THAT SERVICE IS DENIED TO MOST USERS. THEY COULD LET YOU SEARCH DISCORD CROSS-SERVER RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THE FUNCTION ALREADY EXISTS.

Your chats are not private on Discord, they never were. Not even your PMs. Allowing Discord to be properly searchable would not be breaching your privacy because you never had privacy on the service to begin with. Forcing Discord to stop pretending they have no ability to moderate their service for extremism would also not be violating your privacy because they already monitor and moderate you for other things automatically. Besides that, 99% of the extreme shit isn't even happening in private settings, it's happening on public servers in open channels and nobody sees it because the sheer number of servers means that most attention will not be directed to them. Add in to that the inability to collate user behavior across servers because even if you see them acting suspicious in one place you can't know where else they are, and it's basically impossible to find nutcases unless you've already found them (catch-22) or happen to be in the right place at the right time (luck).

I don't even think Discord should allow public search on PMs because nobody else does it, but when you have a publicly-listed server I should be able to search your fucking channels without having to join, and I should be able to search all publicly-listed servers for user activity and terms. That alone would do more to protect kids and other vulnerable people than any moderation effort on the part of Discord, because the perverts and extremists would be found and outed almost instantly by concerned users. It would also massively benefit gaming communities because there would be considerably less walled-garden bullshit where a bunch of fags force you to join their server for a download link. The only people who lose are troons and terminally online retards who want to force people into their clubhouses as some kind of ego stroking activity.

I mentioned this hundreds of pages ago, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see there be actual evidence for social media and maybe videogames having a detrimental effect on people’s brains.

I swear to God some of you have never been through the legal system or know people that work in it and it shows. This isn't an episode of SVU, the county doesn't just throw overworked underpaid public defenders at every person who asks for one, you have to formally file for public counsel after your first arraignment. And if you don't, the judge can even appoint it for you if deemed necessary in your defense. But you actually have to SEE the judge first so that determination can be made.

As you hang around in the Thunderdome a bit longer, you'll start to recognize different posters. Stud is one I recognize, some days he feels like an LLM with a bit too much heat where he will ramble on from some topic or another and present his understanding of it but it doesn't mean anything to anyone else. He can still make relevant and good points, but a lot of it is along the lines of the post you quoted where a general misunderstanding of how things actually work means he spins his gears in a weird direction. He was Civil War sperging in the USPG2 thread and got a month threadban for it because it devolved into people just replying to him about how wrong/stupid/gay/whatever he was for the crime of asking (again and again) why there were no photos of civil war battles in progress - which again, stemmed from a misunderstanding of how long the exposure time for cameras of the time was.

Courts move so much more slowly than most people realize and there's a reason there is an entire vocation devoted to law and court proceedings.
