I think one of Sam's points (and others have said this) is that the Constitution was created for a homogeneous and civil society.

I would add that it was also for many separate and distinct communities (counties, states) loosely (strong emphasis, and referring to their domestic affairs) tied under one banner. That has been so grossly eroded that, there is no relief valve when every contention is an all-or-nothing (federal) struggle against the opposition.

U.S. political history has always seemed cutthroat: the Whiskey Rebellion, jailing of political opposition, both immediately in the post-constitution period; All the strife leading to the Civil War; etc, etc. I don't know what to think about that; I haven't explored much of it.

But, I do know that the Bill of Rights has become what Federalists' feared: the only defined rights we still have, and even barely those. And we are no longer a homogeneous nation of same stock or common virtue. What virtues do our opponents even have?

The point's already been repeatedly made, but I think this does a pretty good job of highlighting the difference between our "cancel culture" and their cancel culture.
Most people probably wouldn't give a fuck if you printed out the tweet that got a chud fired and left it near their house. But this shit? "He is only the first", "could we be getting smart and culling the sick ones", plus all the other psycho shit other leftists are saying is the lowest I think a collective group of people could possibly reach
