Criminal punishment has two purposes: protecting the public from criminals, and deterring would-be criminals.

Leftists love correctly reminding you that harder punishment does not increase the deterrence. Criminals either don't care about consequences or assume they won't be caught.
But keep in mind leftists fail to mention that softer punishment decreases the deterrence, and earlier release of criminals endangers the public.

Yet there is nothing that would make it beneficial to "torture somebody by keeping them alive". All you get is a loss of righteousness and taxpayer money, while failing to restore order by putting those down who unjustly took another life.
Death penalty should be used as appropriate, and as swiftly and humanely as possible. The same way in which you would put down a dangerous sick animal, without glee but in grim determination.

I used to be very, very leftist, I got involved in the anti-war movement in the early 00s and got swept into campaigning for all sorts of shit, including stuff that I initially disagreed with but got convinced I was wrong about, except I knew I wasn't. It makes you kind of hysterical as you are literally being gaslit and gaslighting yourself and I've come to view it as where a lot of my anger came from. Alongside being told that the world is actually being destroyed and we're all in imminent danger. It's a very anxiety inducing way to live.
