Not a gun guy myself but saw gun people saw the shooter was likely aiming for centre mass, but you hit high when you aim low from a higher vantage point. So which is more likely, missed headshot or missed central mass shot? Obviously no one thinks he was aiming for the neck and the carotid artery, that was just a lucky shot.

There are two planes in question: that of the muzzle, and that of the line of sight through the sighting device to the target.

Bullets travel in a parabolic trajectory beginning from the end of the muzzle, which is below the optical line of sight. Depending on the range at which the optic or sighting system is zeroed, the flight path of the bullet will intersect the line of sight once or twice; the first time on its upward trajectory, and the second on its downward trajectory.

When firing from an elevated position, the flight path of the bullet will be affected only by the horizontal distance between the muzzle and the point of impact, since this is what dictates the amount of time the bullet is in travel.

Therefore, there are several reasons why the bullet may have impacted the throat area if the shooter was aiming for the head or for center mass:

• The optic was zeroed at a shorter range such as 100 yards, and the shooter failed to adjust their point of aim according to the actual distance to the target, which was roughly 130 yards in horizontal distance. Ballistic calculations show that a typical 30-06 load would have less than 1" of loss in elevation relative to the line of sight at this range. Therefore, this is unlikely to account for the difference between point of aim and point of impact if the shooter was aiming for a headshot.
• The optic was zeroed for a longer range such as 300 yards, in which case the flight path of the bullet would intersect the optical line of sight at around 20 yards, and would still be traveling on an upward trajectory by the time it reached the point of impact, which would have an elevation of about 5.25" above the optical line of sight at 135 yards. Therefore, this would seem likely to explain a discrepancy between point of aim and point of impact if the shooter was aiming roughly for the upper chest.
• The shooter failed to account for the angle of the shot, and chose a firing solution calculated for the angular distance from the muzzle to the target, rather than the horizontal distance. Assuming that the shooter was elevated 3-4 stories above the target, with a horizontal distance of 134 yards, this would leave us with a "b" side of a triangle, representing the actual distance from the muzzle to the target, of around 135-138 yards, depending on the actual height of the muzzle above the target. There is not enough difference between the horizontal and angular distances from the muzzle to the target to even account for 1" of deviation in the trajectory of the bullet. Therefor, it is unlikely that this accounts for a significant enough difference between point of aim and point of impact to explain why the target was struck in the throat, whether the shooter's point of aim was the head or center mass.

Hence, given the shooter had at least some experience with basic marksmanship, and likely also hunting, the most likely scenario is that the shooter aimed for center mass with an optical zero set for a much greater distance than the actual distance of the shot, and failed to adjust their holdover for point of aim accordingly, striking the target significantly higher than intended.
