Hardly centrists.IIRC, the arrows were originally used by the centrist group in Germany that opposed both the Communists and the Fascists but I think antifa coopted it.
They were militant democratic socialists. The three down arrows stood for Monarchism, Nazism, and Communism respectively. It wasn't really coopted by the antifa. Militant democratic socialists are essentially the front group for radical Anarcho-Syndicalism. Back in the day, those were the two main streams of radical leftism, and they alternately collaborated and undermined each other. They both wanted to overthrow society and install their proletarian revolution, but their means and end goals very different. Communism was authoritarian and hierarchical, had socially conservative mores towards sexuality and criminality, and was more about directly overthrowing the government via revolution, whereas Anarcho-Syndicalism was loosely organized, grassroots, socially liberal, and more about undermining the current society from within to bring about collapse rather than direct confrontation on all fronts.
Much of the effort in far-leftist groups since the fall of communism in the 1990s has been focused on merging the two streams. Moving Communists socially left, and away from tight knit party apparatuses running rural and urban guerilla movements, to networks of affiliate groups within the existing social organizations of a society to reorganize it and control it from within, and using direct actions surgically rather than as a blunt club, all while keeping the far more coherent and attractive Communist messaging.
That's my main beef with Andy Ngo and most other antifa watchers. They have a very shallow and superficial understanding of the history and organization of antifa and other radical leftists, which leads to them fighting the last war instead of the current one.
Know your enemy. Read your history.
