I've never been very active in the HOI4 modding community, so I don't know if this is the usual opinion, but Millenium Dawn is probably one of the worst mods I've played in my entire life, especially given how popular it is.
I ENJOYED playing MD, because I like sitting around and watching Green Line Go UpTM, but when historical AI isn't even historical (Right wing populist Netherlands leaving NATO in a test run), it's not fun. When I say I want historical AI, I want to play The Water Falls up until I want to blow shit up, not the poor man's version of The Fire Rises. There should be a hard-historical and a soft-historical mode, where the latter makes the AI follow historical focuses but lets election results depend on popularity, and the former makes it so every election ends with the historical result.
In CW:IC, there’s an influence mechanic, but I have never seen the AI make use of it. There is a lot of room for shenanigans, like making the majority of your economy leeching from other countries, or straight up colonialism.

The NSM are dull to play, but boy, can they pump out equipment once they secure their position. They have a lovely setup with their mix of mils and civs.
MD benefited of beong one of the first even before KR. It was amazing how fast it was made really. It was also one of the first to add several ideologies and proved you could do that. It was passable at the time but many copy-cat mods came out and in order to not have a tard-fightthey combined into one mod. A mistake as nations like the UK and France still have their 2016 on release focus tree while Fiji has a giant updated focus tree.
If anything The APLA would start in Philly and grow stronger but again this is just for realism. This was pretty much exactly what BTWH was going to do for its 2ACW, BTW - the final map was just North America, albeit obviously all about the American states with Mexico & Canada as bit players. It was a cool concept, shame it had to be in the hands of such a shit team.
Yeah it was pretty fun. I enjoy these small scale mods that focus on one war/theatre.
