Narcissists constantly constantly constantly go out of their way to harm the self esteem of the people around them, but it's not because they just enjoy harming other people. It's because it makes them feel superior and because that person feels like they need the narcissist to make them feel better. If his goal was to just abuse the person, he would say the meanest and most destructive thing he could. But he doesn't. He'll pick at something they're maybe a little self conscious about, and then he'll be very nice to them. It's also why he shuts down on women when he's arguing with them. He's creating a constant hot/cold relationship where the woman has to constantly stay in his favor or relies on him for boosting their self esteem. Negging is a pickup artist tool. It's basically trauma bonding. And there's a reason Steven hates when people bring up that he does it.

He is definitely a narcissist, I'm not saying he isn't, just that the traits shared with a sociopath are so strong that he is one too.
That's not always true, in fact if you've seen someone manipulative try to say the most destructive thing they can, it's quite often the most subtle things that hurt more than the big things. They slide into their mind and sit there, where as when they just go out and say the most vile stuff possible, it is brushed away a lot easier.
