It's more complicated than that. Al-Shabaab carried out some bloody terrorist attacks throughout Africa, most notably in Kenya, which killed American soldiers. They have also seen a huge resurgence in the last few years due to campaigns in Ethiopia. It's a very active group and it's part of the ongoing and very layered civil war in Somalia. We are there because no one else will go and fight, literally no other country bothers, and the alternative is doing nothing. Al-Shabaab also helps the Houthis because they both operate around the Horn of Africa, which is a huge contributing factor in US involvement.
I sure hope the Somalians are grateful for everything when all is said and done.
