Sam seems to have started a downward trend since halfway through starting the Sam Hyde show. Between FT, this, and his more recent content just not being quite as good I don’t think this is an isolated incident. I like his stuff, so it’s a bit of a bummer.

What are we thinking the odds on him upping his TRT from “regular guy in the 1940s” to something much higher are? I’d say they’re pretty good based on the hair.

I think Sam is juggling a lot at once and as a result everything just feels very weak. He has a podcast, he's always guesting on podcasts, stand up comedy tours and dates all throughout the year, needs to be available for Fishtank running 40+ days (Fishtank in 2024 ran for over 3 months combined), Sam Hyde Show, working on Extreme Peace for 2+ years.

I get he's a self proclaimed "workaholic" but I think that sorta pristine sheen he once had on productions has faded a bit. Wish he'd maybe reel himself in a bit and focus on fewer things, and maybe try to maintain a higher effort as a result.

The scrapped Eric Andre, Chet Hanks interview is a mirror example. Chet fucked with him, he couldn't handle it and claimed he was mad because of "safety reasons." It’s interesting how differently people can read the same podcast. I’ve noticed for some people comedy is less about making people laugh but a battle of egos. It goes hand in hand with the whole comedians are philosophers the last bastion of the west shit. As others have pointed out you tell when someone can’t just forfeit their ego and go along with maybe being the butt of the joke. Have thought about this a lot sorry for semi off topic sperging.

I think that 5D meta-irony view of comedy really psyches people out. When Adam Friedland showed up on Steve-O’s podcast, Steve-O and his friend spent the whole time trying to “figure out” what he was really like, as if he were a Machiavellian genius playing a Kaufman esque character. When the simpler reality is that he’s just like that, more comfortable than he seems and knows how to play it up to mess with people. Similar view of how people act like Sam is this mysterious guy that’s hard to pin down. In my view he’s never hidden his beliefs, and it’s easy to tell when he’s out of character. But the assumption that it’s all a construct and the man behind it is this high IQ Machiavellian mastermind leads them to imagine a comedian that doesnt actually exist

I am behind in the thread so late me rate if its been mentioned, but yall have been mentioning the Harland/Tom Green connection, ill speculate on some further minutia:

In the second season of the MTV version of the Tom Green Show, Harland's good friend and fellow leaf Tom had a crash out when his new desk was destroyed by some douche guest who had a chainsaw guitar. It was bad. It was kinda a bad look because its not too far off from shit Tom did to get noticed, so crashing out over a little stunt seemed unbecoming, regardless of how reasonable the crash out was (it was a very new, very expensive custom desk the guy sawed the corner off).

Harland was definitely aware of how Tom's incident played out and it probably informed his decision to approach the situation differently.

Yeah and I've seen some people say the desk had tens of thousands of dollars of recording equipment which I doubt. The desk seemed to be put down quite gracefully so it's unlikely there's even significant damage to begin with (to be clear I haven't watched the whole thing).

I think Sam was maybe expecting a pissed off reaction and Harland didn't do anything to react which just made Sam look dumb. The desk is replaceable within a day or two and it wouldn't require him much effort.

It ends up looking like Sam trying to pull a bit completely alone and failing. But I guess they can't all be winners.

The ending is actually the first thing in this show so far to make me laugh out loud. I don't want to know what that means about me but Charles self-suck finale really got me good. The whole Prom sketch is the closest to what I liked about WP.
School of Comedy is ok, "I sucked my dads dick" is the essence and it is a good bit. Sam teaching girls to be 'almost funny' works but kind of goes nowhere, its a fine premise but goes a bit long and has little to say for its runtime.

I watched the original MDE on TV when it came out, and have always thought Sam has solid instincts when it comes to creating unique, avant garde-esque concepts for visual arts/comedy writing/art direction, but cinematography and other positive characteristics of his art, without fail, get drowned out by weirdly sinister foibles on his part.

It's happened so many times it just starts to seem like he can't control his ego/urge to control, and just masks it with the "ooOoOohhHHhh is it irony or am I serious???" schtick, or by playing philosopher and framing whatever actions as a 'principled stance' or 'staying to to the art' or whatever the fuck, depending on the situation.

The Marky rumors/allegations/lore and associated subject matter are also very, very off putting. I've gone back and forth about it over the years but there's enough specificity and circumstantial material shared about the situation that it's plausible it happened, and he has to know that it's never going to just go away on its own.

Y'know I think Adam Friedland is a very funny microcosm of this new age "ambush bit" style comedy podcast that puts people on their backfoot for no reason. He in particular made his bones being the butt of many bits on Cumtown for being a pathetic worm who took half a decade of shit from a noted manlet and a comically fat and ugly guy, and then semi-famous people come on his show thinking he's a lightweight and completely self-sabotage thinking they're in on the bit. I think the few people who were sparred from looking like fools are those who were actual fans like the guy from the 1975 and Blake Griffin who seem like dyed in the wool Cumtown fans who get the bit.

looked up a couple of clips if Harland and thought he could epically own him, and personally I just can't understand the outliok of someone with that kind of mindset. It KIND OF worked with Matan because he doesn't really give a shit so long as the comedy as good so bringing a posey of Indians worked, but Harland clearly likes to play with his food and is so unflappable that trying to fuck with him back only made the chinese finger trap of their interview tighter and more pointed against Sam. IDK if Harland planned Sam would chimp out for the reason that he did, but it's pretty clear he was mentally prepared for Sam to break under his fucking with him, that served to aggravate Sam's low impulse contrul tempermant even harder.
