No this is the ruling filed on the birthright citizenship EO but the ruling is on the district courts authority to issue nationwide injunctions. Totally different case! This is much bigger and a huge win for Trump. I posted it in A&N.

Does anyone know how the justices go about writing opinions, the formal process I mean? This is the Opinion of the Court and it references Jackson's dissent, so the dissent had existed before this part of the Opinion was written. But some form of the Opinion must have existed before, for her to dissent. So how many of these back and forth iterations can they do? Has there ever been a decision that was basically two lolcows shitting up a forum thread, split between two documents? "NO U" "YES ME"

The justices have conference after a day’s oral arguments. They go into a room with just them. The newest justice has the duty of opening the door for people who knock (this is true, and Justice Stevens said it was great after years of being on duty that a new guy was confirmed so he didn’t have to do it anymore).

They go around the table, usually starting with the chief and then by seniority. They give their takes. Then there’s a vote on what to do. The chief, if he’s in the majority, assigns the case. If not, the senior most justice assigns the case. It works that way for people in dissent, too, if a coherent group of dissenters forms.

After that, it’s weeks to months of writing. Memos may be written and distributed as necessary. When the majority is done, other judges decide whether to join or not. They may have issues and suggest changes. Sometimes it’s unconditional. They also begin sending around concurring opinions and dissents. The same process works for those—people can join or ask for changes. Revisions are then circulated in the same way to address points brought up by other justices. It can ping pong back and forth for a while with that. Usually it ends when there’s nothing more to say, or they believe the other point is so dumb it’s not worth responding to.
