The weird / sad / hilarious thing is that patriots should be proud of New York City. It's quintessentially American: a patchwork of umpteenth-generation immigrant stories that helped make the greatest city in world history. Top marks nationally and globally for food, art, culture, health, finance, and more.

But Jack is so baby-brained and mean-spirited he hates that people can both (a) not agree with him on all social issues and (b) lead happy, productive lives. So he goes la la la la and tells himself and others how secretly miserable those people must be.
