Any Berserk soundtrack is usually pretty great, especially from the 97 series. Holy shit.

This theme hits like a truck after the ending.

Also the Samurai Champloo soundtrack, ho my god. It's a shame Nujabes is dead, I can't imagine what we'd have now.

Good pick OP. Hope you've heard a bit of his discography because a lot of it is really solid outside of just the anime stuff. If I recall correctly he composed FORCES specifically for the BERSERK (1997) animated TV show.
Another honorable mention for Susumu is the opening to Paranoia Agent, the whole soundtrack is pretty solid for that show.

Carrying on with the Satoshi Kon anime angle I'll also submit Nightmare by Masahiro Ikumi for the Perfect Blue soundtrack. It's something you'd feel would fit right at home in a Silent Hill soundtrack.

Even if you don't seem to understand, Serial Experiments Lain has a really good soundtrack that goes beyond the much meme'd opening track by Boa, featuring lots of variety. The Deus Theme, Prototype A and Lain's Theme come to mind as being really solid and greatly varied in sound. I highly suggest skimming through the Bootleg soundtrack release.

Made in Abyss has a really well composed and varied soundtrack. A lot of the tracks are comprised of beautiful strings as well as some more piano heavy tracks but there is also a darker, almost industrial side to it. If you're reluctant to listen to this because it's from an anime then you'll be happy to know that Anglosphere hands composed the entire soundtrack. Like most Australians, he's pretty good at music.

Madoka Magica is also a good entry as far as anime music is concerned. The music is varied, at some points sounding like something out of medieval Europe. Meanwhile, other tracks, such as the ending theme, take on a more heavy metal aspect. Other songs however can be comprised of somber sounding choirs.

I always was a fan of Tsuneo's Perfect Night from the series, it's quite the deviation from the rest of the soundtrack and I loved it. Also Knives was really good.

The Shiki soundtrack is bloody amazing, it's right up there with the Higurashi soundtrack for me in terms of horror OSTs.

.hack was a rough sit for me and a friend, but we both agreed the soundtrack was actually really good on its own (it was just sadly poorly utilized in the show).
