Warner Bros. Shuts Down Three Game Studios, Cancels Wonder Woman Title

Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. is closing three video-game studios and halting work on a highly anticipated Wonder Woman title in a bid to boost the profitability of its interactive entertainment business.

Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego are being shuttered, according to a memo to staff viewed by Bloomberg News.

The cuts reflect a refocusing of the games division on major franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones and DC Comics, primarily Batman.

“The quality of too many of our new releases has really missed the mark,” JB Perrette, head of games and streaming for Warner Bros., wrote in the memo. “We need to make some substantial changes to our portfolio/team structure if we are to commit the necessary resources to get back to a ‘fewer but bigger franchises’ strategy.”

In a statement to Bloomberg, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. Games said the shutdowns were “not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.”

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that the Wonder Woman game was in trouble and that the Warner Bros. Games unit was facing a difficult 2025 following the underperformance of last year’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, MultiVersus and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Current and former employees blamed the weak slate on indecisiveness and a lack of vision under president David Haddad, who stepped down in January.

Monolith, based in Kirkland, Washington, had been making video games since 1994 including cult classics such as The Operative: No One Lives Forever and F.E.A.R. In 2014, it received critical acclaim for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, an action game set in The Lord of the Rings universe.

Player First Games was purchased by Warner Bros. last July, just before the release of its sole game, MultiVersus. Last month, Warner Bros. said it was shutting down that title following poor performance.

Warner Bros games made that "new" Harry Potter game. Haven't even heard of the other two.
Good riddance. Modern AAA gaming is really starting to ape how Atari was doing shit right before the game crash of '83, just putting out crap as quickly as possible. Only now the dev teams are hundreds to thousands not four guys in a back room so there's way more overhead.

More game industry layoffs? Damn I'm soooo surprised.

I'd say I'm sad the studio that made F.E.A.R. is dead but they haven't made anything I've wanted to play in a long time.
Same studio in name only, how many people from that time are still there?
Good riddance, let it all burn. Play old games, nothing new worthwhile is coming out anyways so let these studios suffocate.

Wonder Woman game so "highly anticipated" this is the first I am hearing of it.

Probably was a losing proposition anyway. Make WW ugly and it won't sell, make her beautiful and the model would be used and abused by 3D porn artists.

It's honestly amazing how bad some of these people are at making money. Warner has so many good IPs which lend themselves to games and they managed to fumble the bag on all of it.

It's so good the woke shit is getting shelved. I'm all for gaming being gutted so long as it means getting the 'progressives' out and developers can focus on making good games again.

Rip Monolith. So this also means that the Jupiter engine has officially ceased development then.

There's a lot of good AA and smaller titles, nowadays. Might have to do some digging though on some of them.

Some of them like Ultrakill are crack-cocaine tier though. If you ever wanted a game in which you can punch your bullets as they leave your gun to make them explode on impact, that exists now.

Now release the source code for Blood, cowards.
Also throw in the code for No One Lives Forever and its sequel. Because all the parties involved (WB, Microsoft, and Disney) are too lazy to figure out who owns what. But are not lazy enough to send a C&D to Nightdive for trying to get it reissued.

Fox Interactive published the game. Fox sold their gaming studio to Vivendi. Then they got merged with Activision. Then Activision merged with Blizzard. And then MS bought Activision-Blizzard. Disney owns fox now. And WB owns the remains of Monolith, the developer for the games.

This was a long time coming. The WB execs were demanding awful "Live Service" games and seemed genuinely surprised that the absolute shit these studios were shoving out to comply with demands weren't selling.

They put a ton of time and money behind Multiversus for it to be ignored and have all the impact of a wet fart in a hurricane.

They were shocked that their edgelord Suicide Squad game where you literally murder heroes and piss on the corpse of the Flash... was received poorly.

And they couldn't understand why their shitty Quidditch game that was repetitive and devoid of any real depth or content couldn't keep players and had something like a 90+% player drop-off after the first month.

They've fallen a long way from Arkham Asylum, Shadows of Mordor, and Injustice.
