I hope that Elon Musk finds all the zombie loans at the Department of Education. I'm going for Round 3 on a loan that was paid off during Covid. The system can't fucking handle it because the Biden Administration gave everyone forbearances because of Covid, but I was so close to paying it off, I refused the forbearance and kept paying. I got the final release on it, but when everybody else's forbearance ran out, I got a bill. For $0. Due in 2035.

I sent in a copy of the release paperwork to the DOE. Now we're in the "Who are you? What loan? Oh yeah, never got your paperwork, could you send it again?" phase of the process, which lasted SEVEN YEARS last time (different loan). I believe the DOE keeps these loans in the books to inflate their assets on paper. Maybe there's nobody there that's smart enough to fix it. Assuming one is already somewhat stable and socking away money into savings already, I'd take the 5,000 and put it in QQQ, VOO, SPYI, SCHD, and/or QQQM. Pretend it doesn't exist and let it sit for about ten years and make more money than I'd ever make letting it sit in a savings account. Putting it into a Roth wouldn't be bad either as I saw another Kiwi say.
