Business Video game maker Ubisoft in chaos after anti-DEI backlash - The ‘Assassin’s Creed’ game maker delayed its biggest launch of the year, reduced forecasts, and is facing calls to sell, in what is being called an ‘incel victory.’

On September 24, Ubisoft abruptly canceled its appearance at the Tokyo Game Show and postponed all press previews of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Wednesday, we learned why. Anti-DEI backlash has sent the company spinning.

The Paris-based video game publisher pushed the release of its biggest game of the year from November 12 to February 14 of next year—and warned investors that net bookings would no longer exceed the 2.3 billion euros of last year, but come in at a disappointing 1.95 billion euros. That sent shares lower Thursday, continuing a rough year for the company (UBI.PA). Year to date, shares are down 57%, which has stirred up some activist investors to call for a sale.

The bookings’ shortfall was, technically, due to the delay and disappointing sales of Star Wars: Outlaws. However, the underlying reason for both of those, at least in part, is the far-right opposition to diversity and inclusion.

Outlaws, which has a female lead character, received mostly solid reviews from professional critics; but many players gave it a zero rating out of 10 on Metacritic, citing “forced DEI narratives” and claiming the developers “spent more time on the woke culture than on the story and gameplay.” Some players were also unhappy with the optional season pass model that tacked an additional $40 onto the game’s price for extra missions. (The season pass/downloadable content model has been a popular one in the industry for many publishers, and is used in Fortnite and Dark Souls 3.)

That review bombing, driven by anti-DEI backlash, seemingly worked—and set off a chain of events that led to Wednesday’s announcement.

“We believe Star Wars Outlaws was impacted by a coordinated effort that sought to troll Ubisoft games specifically and Star Wars content in general,” wrote Michael Pachter of Wedbush in an analyst’s note. “This is a case of a rare incel victory that led to Ubisoft having to take down its numbers.”

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot addressed the controversy directly in announcing the revised guidance.

“Let me address some of the polarized comments around Ubisoft lately,” he wrote. “I want to reaffirm that we are an entertainment-first company, creating games for the broadest possible audience, and our goal is not to push any specific agenda. We remain committed to creating games for fans and players that everyone can enjoy.”

That’s unlikely to quiet far-right critics. In fact, the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which was already under fire by that group for having a female ninja and a Black samurai as lead characters in a game set in feudal Japan, could embolden detractors. GamerGate-friendly forums on Reddit are already celebrating the announcement and taking a victory lap, with a few racist comments thrown in.

But gameplay mechanics weren’t what caused the prerelease backlash of Shadows. As far back as July, the development team has found itself on the defensive for its choice to include a Black protagonist in the game. (That character, Yasuke, is based on an actual Black samurai from the 16th century.)

“While we strive for authenticity in everything that we do, Assassin’s Creed games are works of fiction inspired by real historical events and figures,” the development team wrote in July. “From its inception, the series has taken creative license and incorporated fantasy elements to craft engaging and immersive experiences. The representation of Yasuke in our game is an illustration of this. His unique and mysterious life made him an ideal candidate to tell an Assassin’s Creed story with the setting of feudal Japan as a backdrop.”

Despite the anti-DEI backlash, Ubisoft doesn’t seem like it’s making radical changes to the next Assassin’s Creed. The company, in its announcement Wednesday, vowed to “[fulfill] the promise of our dual-protagonist adventure, with Naoe and Yasuke bringing two very different gameplay styles.” To boost sales, the company said it would give anyone who preorders the game the first expansion for free.

Pachter said he still expects the game to sell more than 7 million copies, adding “this game has the potential to be one of Ubisoft’s bestsellers ever.”

That might not be enough for some investors. Reuters, on Thursday, reported an activist investor, pushing for the sale of Ubisoft to a third-party or private equity investors, claimed to have the support of 10% of the company’s shareholders.

Nope.
The only source for kunoichi (literally meaning woman at the time) was a ninja hiring prostitutes or just using women in general as a distraction.
she can be a criminal, yes
ninja, no
Tbf, Ninjas in general is a highly romanticized concept. They were just the generic medieval spies/assassin rather than psuedo magical warriors. In that regard, Kunoichi existed as usual honeytraps with maybe some brainwashed women there to become concubines or kill high value targets.

They aren't pulling out of the release cycle of AC to "fix" or fix anything.... they're just hoping that in four months, this online noise will all go away so they can re-release it to nice, normal and quiet manufactured praise..... just like they planned.......totally unaware that this won't work because the internet doesn't forgive or forget.

The game's gonna release in the same condition it almost did, they aren't dropping any of this DEI shit and they aren't making any fundamental changes to anything they've already invested in.

The only thing they're doing is hoping the "Trolls" don't notice this time, because modern executives STILL don't understand the internet.

Última edición:
they started with king arthur and it just kept increasing over time until now no one would flinch at jesus christ himself being a woman
honestly, i'm more pissed off they made julius caesar into a fat fuck in a gachaslop game and the dindu nuffin of servants' backstories (they got this right with heavily implying Cu wouldn't accept no as an answer from a woman in Hollow Ataraxia and they kept him impregnating Aife as punishment in his backstory along with all the other skeevy shit the rest of the servants did but lord forbid waifus and husbandos be imperfect)
Funny you mention Caesar. Only reason they made the guy fat was just to have a fat character. That said if his Rider version did show up, it would be pic related. Same artist too.

specifically, they delayed it to smack-dab in the middle of Black History Month. Which is the categorical definition of a cowardly move.

Thing is, there have been ‘historical’ games with female warriors and all kinds of shit like that before. It’s just like, don’t be all smug about it or dismissive of your potential customers, game devs want to throw shit in your face and make you eat it. That is just not gonna work out for you. You are not an essential need and there are other devs not up their own ass. I mean fuck no one cried about the accuracy of games like Dynasty Warriors. Because they didn’t have an agenda they were trying to push.

I should at some point dig further into the Thomas Lockley affair, got a mate who's still not certain about what's going on with this stuff and is sceptical it's as bad as it sounds.

On topic for the thread it's funny that backlash now means "not buying games they don't like the look of." These companies really do believe they are entitled to people's money. Similarly them trying to scream racism when they decide their first game in a historical period in Japan does not focus on a Japanese character demonstrates they have very few good counterpoints.

Japanese media has depicted female ninja for decades. Whether those depictions are historically accurate or if it was just an excuse to add attractive women to the story, I don't know and won't debate it. The point here is that the Japanese themselves were including female ninja in their stories long before Ubisoft existed, and the Japanese audience is generally accepting of it. That particular idea at least isn't some unique, foreign DEI trash.

What they'll use this time for, is to try to fix the myriad of bugs and maybe historical inconsistencies that have seeped through their trailers. They released SW:Outlaws in a ridiculously bad state and clearly they were about to do the same with AC:S.

But as said above it's also to get the backlash to die down, which it won't, game will still tank on release because the devs are incompetent.
A lot of studios including Ubisoft have been getting rid of qualified senior devs & artists to replace them with young, cheap, diversity hires (troons, poons & faggits), who couldn't make a good game if their lives depended on it.

"Far-right critics" get the fuck out of here, i'm one of those that get pandered to by DEI, you're retarded & brainwashed if you think only the far right wants none of it, DEI does much more harm than good. Some people forgot what games were made for, learn to make good games before trying to convey a message.
that's how they portray things like this as "bad". these people think simple association with the far right will make a bunch of average joes look the other way to shit like this, but the truth is that people actually want to play good games, not games filling DEI quotas with no thought as to how it will impact the end user experience. just as long as they check off those boxes, everything is right with the world for them.

and hey, if people don't like the game, it's definitely the end user's fault for not appreciating such a fine work of art that took years to craft. we cannot make errors as a multi billion dollar company.

They had it coming and it's not 'incel racist chuds that don't go along with OUR HOLY PROGRAM'. Ubisoft has been doing stupid shit for a decade now; they could afford that. Money was cheap, investors lining up, and they could spend their way out of a corner. Now things are tough, the bond market is tight and nobody wants to buy trash DEI-infested gigaslop from a corporation that is known for fucking over the customer.

Get fucked, Ubisoft. Get fucked.

I think their problem this time is that goyslop consoomers generally also like anime and shit so the one thing they know about medieval Japan is that it definitely doesn't have any black people in it.

If they wanted a black protagonist then they could have just set in South Africa or something, then they could have the player killa da racists and have em meet Shaka Zula or something.

This man/woman combo were pretty amusing at pointing out just about everything wrong with the trailers.

It's actually ludicrous how much stuff Ubisoft fucked up. I haven't watched the video in a few days but off the top of my head:

  • Size of grapes
  • How to write Japanese correctly (orientation on the paper/size)
  • Size of maps
  • The actual map
  • Those Japanese statues that ward off bad shit
  • Stairs
  • Platforms
  • Snow
  • Characters hard clipping into each other during assassinations
  • Depicting the Buddhist statue
I'm sure there's way more. There's a funny part towards the end where the lady assassin goes to kill someone that's firing a gun (that has floating shells around, for a musket) and the platform turns from wood planks into bamboo when the camera angle changes to the underside. The quality control on their fucking RELEASE TRAILERS is insanely bad.

This article actually demonstrates the true value that DEI pandering has to large media companies - it allows your shills to write articles painting any backlash to the product as "far right hatred against diversity" and sidelines the actual, more concrete problems with the game. The main reason I don't buy Ubisoft games and haven't for almost a decade now is the money gauging. $70 to $140 for the base game plus microtransactions and a $40 season pass system on top of a singleplayer title is comically scummy, and ties the game to online services which means it won't be playable in 10 years anyway.
I think most people are willing to put up with some woke bullshit as long as a) it's not the core element of the game (like Concord) and b) the game isn't a scam or utter dogshit. A lot of AAA games either fail at one or both of these criteria.

Bold added by me. This part made me unreasonably furious because it's a level of mistake you wouldn't see in a fucking Newgrounds flash game for fuck's sake.

The funniest part about Yasuke to me is that he’s an actual dude referenced in primary sources when we always play as completely fictitious characters in AC (as far as I remember). That means Ubisoft really really couldn’t help themselves when they heard there was a real black dude in Japan. We were always going to plays as him and no amount series tradition was going to stop that.

Knowing Ubi they would somehow make that unsatisfying and boring.
It would take forever to get the warhammer because you'd need to send your trusty jackal companion Mbutu out to collect materials for hours while you rescue your old middle school friend N'bonga's gay lover Rico from a cave he got lost in so N'bonga would get over his grief and build it for you.
