Trump definitely knows that Project 2025 exists, but keep in mind he's a malignant narcissist: he will do as much or as little of Project 2025 as suits him in the immediate moment. So, when he says that Project 2025 doesn't have any sway over him, he's actually not lying. He does not have deeply held policy beliefs; he's backed down on things before, especially if a celebrity (particularly a younger, attractive female) is willing to spend time with him to "talk things over." He's also been open about accepting bribes from oil companies and the Saudis. The right-wing power brokers know this; their best hope is that they can control him more in a second term than they did in the first because they know his levers.

The lack of celebrity endorsement and participation in the Republican Party has always been an embarrassment for Trump. Hulk Hogan, UFC domestic abusers, and washed-up country musicians are the best he can get. He'd kill at least one of his children to get an endorsement from Taylor Swift. It chaps his ass that, even now, so many famous people won't share a stage with him - that is partially what drives his anti-elite, anti-Hollywood rhetoric.

There is a deep distrust of the media at large in left-leaning circles as well. A lot of this comes from the left's belief that the media favors reporting on Trump because they make a lot of money off him; there's also the issue that Jeff Bezos now owns the Washington Post, Elon Musk owns X, Mark Zuckerberg has praised Trump, and there has been some behind-the-scenes editorial decisions at the New York Times and NBC News (specifically MSNBC) that many think favor the right-wing. Increasingly, liberals who are interested in politics are moving to sources such as MeidasTouch and Bryan Tyler Cohen. Incidentally, The Young Turks, DailyKos, and Democracy Now are not heavily watched by liberals, but rather people on the far left, such as those who openly call themselves democratic socialists and are more likely to follow politicians such as Cornel West and Jill Stein.

The only other options I really liked were Flynn and Ramaswamy, and both of them would probably be getting dragged harder than Vance is right now. Ramaswamy would get similar criticisms to Javier Milei and Flynn might actually start cutting off people's heads and putting them on spikes.

When the baseline insult is accusing republicans of being serial child rapists, "couch fucker" is a pretty significant improvement. If that's the best dirt anyone can find, that means he's probably pretty clean.
