Online it says the hives can be from heat or sweat. The marks in question are the “ track marks” people were speculating about. It checks out.

There's a scene (the best scene) in the movie Gettysburg where Colonel Buford, played by the great Sam Elliot, knows his troops will be ordered to make a pointless and suicidal attack if he doesn't succeed in preventing Lee's army from taking the high ground around the town.
