Business Starbucks’ political activism has backfired

For an American company to build and maintain a customer base, it must choose one of two courses: either be apolitical and serve all Americans, or be political in a single consistent direction and serve only some (like Ben & Jerry’s). It cannot be political in all directions at once, or in different directions at different times as fashions or the caprices of company leadership dictate. If it does, it halfway alienates all its customers which, in a competitive market, is as good as alienating them entirely.

This is what is gradually happening with Starbucks, where it has been reported that “trouble is brewing” at the company over a price hike on its drinks as well as fights over unionisation and protests against the company’s Israel stance. For years, Starbucks tried to be all things to all people, which served it well in its product and experience portfolio. The corporation offers olive oil-laced “oleato” coffees and Starbucks Reserve stores for the connoisseur, pink drinks for the young and hip, and then just plain old coffee for the ordinary folks. But in the political realm, this same approach has caused Starbucks a major — and mounting — headache.

Like so many companies, the coffee giant was swept up in the political maelstrom of 2020 and 2021. It pledged $100 million for businesses focused on “advancing racial equity”. It allowed employees to wear activist clothing and accessories to work, provided that the clothing supported the Black Lives Matter movement. In many Starbucks stores, June Pride Month celebrations went from discreet lapel pins to wall-covering shrines.

But when America’s political pendulum began to swing back the other way, these efforts proved far more problematic for Starbucks — which serves American cities as diverse as Seattle in Washington and Sheridan in Wyoming — than they have for Ben & Jerry’s. In 2023, when Starbucks managers began pulling back on Pride displays in stores, workers at 150 outlets went on strike.

Around the same time, the company found itself the target of activist lawsuits from shareholders over its DEI policies. Labour groups began to question the contrast between Starbucks’ political progressivism and its anti-union employment policies. And late last year, most troubling so far for the company’s bottom line, Starbucks found itself squarely in the crosshairs of public passions over the war in Gaza.

The controversy began last October following the Hamas attack on Israel, when a social media account operated by a Starbucks employee union posted the message “Solidarity with Palestine”. Starbucks’ corporate arm, reasonably worried about offending customers, denounced the message and filed a lawsuit against the union for using Starbucks insignia as part of the message. Angered by the suit, Left-leaning pro-Palestinian customers began to boycott the company.

Boycotts tend to be inflated in the media, but evidence is mounting that this one should be taken seriously. Following underwhelming earnings results in January of this year, Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan cited “misperceptions about [Starbucks’] position” relating to “events in the Middle East”. He tried to play both sides, refraining even from mentioning “Israel” or “Gaza” by name on the call. But the numbers have continued trending downward. Starbucks has now lost 3% of its US sales since last year and, most distressingly, 4% of its highly loyal Rewards members.

Top financial analysts have rejected explanations such as the company’s high prices, and point squarely to the boycotts as the reason. As one commented: “When you look back and you see the magnitude of the shift […] that occurred in such a short time, that doesn’t usually point to something that’s macro in nature or price point-related in nature.” As for the boycott, the analyst added: “You’d really be putting your head in the sand not to think that it has had an effect.”

Would Starbucks have been better off just supporting the union and pledging its support for Palestine? After its centrist retrenchment of the last year, hardly. After all, Israeli partisans are just as capable of boycotts as Palestinian ones. The two lessons Starbucks and other companies should learn from this ongoing debacle are far deeper: first, if you become a political company, you have to pick a side and stick with it. Second, if you already are a political company, if an issue is important to your customers, you cannot claim neutrality, as apolitical companies can. Far better to leave politics to the citizens of our free society, and focus on selling coffee.

The price is whats killing them. Most excused the woke internal company crap because it doesn't affect their coffee and wallet too much but when 2 drinks start costing $20 people are going to look elsewhere. Their Israel and other political activities were the final straw. Almost everyone I know now goes to Dunkin' or McDonalds.

For the price Starbucks is now, you can just go to your local boutique coffeehouse and get something far superior in quality.
I can't get over how weird Starbucks' business sense is.

They used to be perceived as the 'nice' middle class place for coffee, but now their quality is on par with other fast food places. So I wouldn't think it'd have been that hard to lean in towards being the nicer place and try focusing on better quality coffee beans while trying to make it a better hangout spot again.

Because I think they started cheaping out about the atmosphere of their stores, figuring online or drive-thru orders were fine for maximizing profitability and removing seating would prevent homeless being an issue. But didn't realize this would damage their brand as people wouldn't be able to associate hanging out at the place with the coffee itself anymore.

Worked for a private airport terminal for a short time. High end business and private jet traffic. Rich fuckers.
Served Starbucks coffee as part of the concierge service. Worst coffee, no flavor, just bitter. Million dollar jets, shitty coffee. I never could figure out why Starbucks when there are fantastic local big brands. Other than an attempt to not be seen serving the common coffee that the poors drink.

Find your local mom & pop roaster. Much better places to hang out, prices are often a little cheaper, and they sell fresh grounds to your taste. Starschmucks cant do that.
Have never found this to be true. As insufferable as Starbucks is, the "mom and pop" is going to cost at least a dollar more for the same thing because they have some boutique beans hand picked by indigenous feminist scholars or whatever. And the barista is going to have another 6 oz of metal in her face, and an even more advanced obscure set of pronouns. And there will be an enormous political flag over the register, and the baristas will be ruder than a record store hipster.

That might be true in whatever yuppie infested coastal location you are in. Its a different world in dirt poor Southern state where I am.
As far as feminist scholars? IDK, but I do support farmers, the ones who work the land so your feminist scholar has something to write and whine about. Being a forest nigger myself, I am totally down with indigenous people actually trying to make a living and not suck off the local government.

Local coffee shops are a hit or miss though, usually a miss. They can be just as woke and politically deranged as Starbucks if not more, depending on the location. The ideal situation is to import your favorite Arabic or Turkish coffee grounds and brew it yourself.

I went to one that used beans that were worse than Starbux; it was so bad, my dad (who only drinks instant) couldn't even tolerate it.

I asked someone else about it after the place was long gone, and they said something about the beans they used were typically meant for espresso. I'm not a coffee-drinker, so I have no clue how any of this works. It did smell really, really, really bitter, though.

Quality is the other attribute local shops can have issues with. In the name of being unique and totally hipster, I've seen some shops forgo basic hygiene in place of style. I bet the shop you went to used second hand beans.

Not sure if this counts as woke, but check the Yellow Cafe cult, its a cult with a deli/coffee shop. So kinda related. Interesting fact they have a location in Pulaski TN, birthplace of the KKK. Bizarre stuff.
I traveled around bumfuck rural Alabama and found great Christian conservative coffee shops, most rural towns have one. One run by a local church. Another has a hair salon. Its a southern thing I guess. Great places to do field office work in the summer, they have free wifi, air conditioning and you can hang out there for hours if you mind your manners.
Maybe I am just lucky and dont have these weird coffee shops everyone talks about. The nearest Starbucks in an hour away.

Yeah there are some no nonsense coffee shops spread throughout. I had the pleasure of visiting a veteran owned coffee truck in somewhere random Missouri. I guess I've experienced more hippie type local shops than normal ones due to being near city centers.

There's a chain in Texas called Summer Moon that people keep trying to cancel because they openly shit on abortion. It hasn't worked because the coffee is good.

being near city centers.
That's it. Its just what the local culture is and its often very different from what I read online. For what's that's worth.
Just to throw an exception in, best coffee shop I have ever been too was a Ethiopian cafe in Nashville. Legit African. Food and everything. Visited so often, they would give me free food to take to work and new foods to try. The coffee is out of this world.

You're quite literally describing starsucks outside of the US. It's even more ridiculously overpriced in countries where an excellent top tier espresso costs the equivalent of $2.90 and a delicious natural V60 is just under $4, they're always virtue signalling about their ethically produced "signature blends" (that are indistinguishable from each other because they are all fucking BURNT) and staffed by retarded early 20s fake hipsters, seriously not even real hipsters but just people pretending to be hipsters. If they were for real, they'd be working at a real coffee shop. Also unlike the US there is no culture of fake smiles / pretending to be polite here.

Starbucks tastes horrible.
Worked there in college, and it was a good paying job at the time, and offered benefits.
I think they still give benefits for part time work, and I know they will cover transition surgery as well which is a fortune and also puts you out of action for ages. So that nasty sugary burned taste is paying for all those axe wound installations as well. I wonder what their wage and benefits bill is like compared to another fast food type outfit? Maybe that’s clobbering them as well?
I don’t know why you’d bother going to Starbucks . Even here in UK land there are better coffee houses and in Europe there’s far cheaper and better everywhere

More and more I feel like I'm living in an Ayn Rand novel. But then her early childhood was growing up under the Bolsheviks and no wonder her novels always have this fanatical rejection of businesses pretending to social values. Starbucks is a pretty good example of it.

The older I get the more I realize I just prefer pouring a cup myself from a donut shop or diner. Cheap and only two options: regular and decaf (so really no options). Fancy coffee is all bullshit. Doesn’t matter how nice your beans are when it’s all made with the same city shit water anyway. At home I can use bottled water and make a good cup myself.

My mind was absolutely blown when I found out there are people that mineralize their water in a very specific way to get the water to taste the way they like it. A lot of them are serious coffee and tea aficionados, but to me it's just insanity.
Here's an example of it: https://teasecrets.home.blog/2021/01/10/water-recipe-3-truth-serum-updated-version/

While I do appreciate really good-tasting water, this seems like a lot of effort...
