What's the cheapest ring to propose with that doesn't look like crap?

Get a non-diamond stone that she likes on silver or gold. Ask what her color season is to figure out if gold or silver will flatter her better, or just observe her jewelry and see what she wears more. Just look up color seasons yourself and compare what she told you to what color metal is best. You don't have to understand it, if she's into it she'll be happy and if not it's not hurting anything.
Don't cheap out too hard, if you can't get a real stone then save money for longer or something. Don't propose marriage with a lie. I don't know how some of you retards think that sounds like a good idea.

It was what I proposed with because I didn’t have ring money at the time, but shifted to the job of daily wear wedding band. Not so proud of the job I did to want to re-give it to her in front of a bunch of people.

What I did was take 12 gauge solid copper wire and braze a section to itself to make a loop. That’s the hardest part, because the better the braze, the less copper you’ll lose to polish it up and make it look nice.

I flattened it out and got the size by rolling it on a metal table with a piece of steel rod through the center like a rolling pin, then yeah, polished it
 
I went with a vintage engagement and wedding ring combo off Etsy. Got a nice 1950s set, for about $1000 usd.

If I'd gone with just an engagement ring, I probably could have halved the cost, and if you don't want to go with a diamond, you're pretty much just limited by your lady's sense of style.

I got a set because I was planning on proposing and getting married in a two-three day window (I wanted to elope).

I also didn't spend a fortune, because I figured that my wife would one day want to get a different style (she's always said she will, but hasn't gotten around to it in 5 years).

If you want to get as close to diamond as reasonable without the cost, then Moissanite. If you get one that is coated with Diamond-Like Carbon, it can be very difficult to tell them apart. It will even fool a thermal diamond tester.
 
If you have access to a crucible, you could forge it yourself. Just run the lost wax tech with some sterling silver. Buy some melee diamonds if you want to spice things up.

If you have access to a faceter and an electric saw, you can buy an artificial sapphire chunk in the color of her birth stone and facet it to something nice.

Edit:I'm a guy, and I have no idea what your girl is like. If someone went to the ends of the earth to make something as small as a wedding ring for me, they would mean the world to me.

Check a local antique jeweler if you have one. They usually have lots of rings at various prices and can even get them resized. Ignore the 3 months salary rule, that's just a post-war marketing gimmick old jewelers used to push almost 100yrs ago.
 
Volunteer at your local hospice, you get to help the dying and swipe their jewelry before the body turns cold. Pick someone with distant living relatives, the last thing you need is someone claiming the body and noticing that the ring is gone.
 
Moissanite if you want the look of a diamond, or small diamonds on a band if you want real diamonds. Etsy rings if you really mean cheap. Ask your mom or grandma to use their ring if they haven’t promised it to another relative.
If you go with a cheap stone you can always plan to keep the ring and upgrade the stone for an anniversary when you get financial stability.
