Troonisim is acceptable in different churches. He could have jumped church, dragged his wife and kids to one of those 'Christian counseling' sessions that are designed to destroy the wife's self esteem and make her feel like a bad person if she refuses to 'forgive' the husband who obviously holds her in complete and utter contempt and disgust, called himself a 'sex addict' all that shit... the issue here isn't that he was outed as a deviant. The issue is that he lost/was going to lose his position in the church and the community. He wasn't going to be a Very Important Person anymore, he was going to be a garden variety penitent who'd have to kiss arse for the next decade before he'd be allowed within spitting distance of any sort of authority.

A narc who couldn't cope with the idea that he was going to be a nobody and that no one would ever see him as the superior specimen that he was again, and ate his gun. Many such cases. Hopefully his children don't inherit his personality disorder.

I'm not going to quote scripture at a dead pastor, but of all people he should have understood why the bible explicitly forbids crossdressing. It's deeply frustrating and disturbing that a man who seemingly had everything (a wife, kids, being a positive figure in his community) still had this temptation to go and live out a fantasy of being some tranny bimbo online.
