Why self-checkout has been an inconvenient 'failure' for both shoppers and stores

Comments (Archive) For shits and giggles!

Self-checkout kiosks became increasingly common in stores in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and retailers hailed them as a major convenience for shoppers.

But journalist Amanda Mull, in a biting article published by The Atlantic on October 19, stresses that self-checkout has turned out be the polar opposite of "convenient." Self-checkout, according to Mull, has been a headache for consumers as well as stores.

Mull recalls that in the past, the argument for self-checkout was "scan your stuff, plunk it in a bag, and you're done. Long checkout lines would disappear."

But the journalist adds that the reality of self-checkout has been much different.

"You still have to wait in line," Mull laments. "The checkout kiosks bleat and flash when you fail to set a purchase down in the right spot. Scanning those items is sometimes a crapshoot — wave a barcode too vigorously in front of an uncooperative machine, and suddenly, you've scanned it two or three times. Then, you need to locate the usually lone employee charged with supervising all of the finicky kiosks, who will radiate exasperation at you while scanning her ID badge and tapping the kiosk's touch screen from pure muscle memory."

Mull adds, "If you want to buy something that even might carry some kind of arbitrary purchase restriction — not just obvious things such as alcohol, but also, products as seemingly innocuous as a generic antihistamine — well, maybe don't do that."

Self-checkout, according to Mull, has not only been a hassle for shoppers — it has been expensive for retailers, as "the average four-kiosk setup runs around $125,000." And when stores cut their staffs, she notes, theft became more common.

Some retailers, Mull reports, realize that self-checkout has problems and are cutting back on it — or at least making adjustments.

"Costco is stationing more staffers in its self-checkout areas," Mull reports. "ShopRite is adding cashiers back into stores where it had trialed a self-checkout-only model, citing customer backlash. None of this is an indication that self-checkout is over, exactly. But several decades in, the kiosks as Americans have long known them are beginning to look like a failure."

Worse than Self checkouts are stores that have automatic security gates and railings separating the entrance and exits. Sometimes you don't buy anything and you have to walk through the self checkout area to get to the exit.

Also the security theatre gates and railing makes me feel like a Nigger. Why can't we just have them in Nigger only stores and have Whites Only Stores without all the bullshit?

Filling your own gas isn't really that much work. You just put the pump in and it fills up. It's not the same thing where you have to actively be working the whole time, scanning everything and putting it in bags, and it also doesn't fall apart the way self-checkouts do.
That's fair, I guess. I don't really care if other people prefer not to use self-checkout for whatever reason; I've just seen some people (mostly boomers on FB) get weirdly indignant about the very idea. Like it's not even that they simply don't like using it -- they act deeply offended that the option even exists in the first place. Not to mention people who use it as an occasion for moral grandstanding along the lines of "Well, I believe in not taking jobs away from people! <huffs own farts>".

I thought it will be niggers, but the issue is boomers. God forbid they actually learn how to use new tech.
I think it's a little of column A, a little of column B.

Sometimes, I just don't feel like interacting with another human being and want to get in and out as quickly as possible and I'd rather not wait on boomers scribbling out checks with arthritic fingers, or goddamn New England normies gabbing with the cashiers about the news or the Patriots/Red Sox and slowing everything down.

Gen Z should consider themselves lucky they never had to be behind a boomer at the register wait until it's all totaled and then whips out the checkbook. You're stuck there for 10 min.

It's amazing watching the mental gymnastics these witless fucks will do to avoid naming the golem.
Self checkout worked great before we became a society that doesn't police it's roaming chimp population. The worst issues I saw with it before even when working retail was that sometimes some dumbass would read the sign that said "20 items or less" and decide her buggy loaded with 200 things qualified, thus causing delay.
Now these stores have a glut of workers standing around doing basically nothing while self checkouts have turned into beeping turnstiles for shoplifters. Even with the scales and cameras they've added people still walk out with tons of shit and half the time there isn't even an attendant at the stand watching the checkouts.

The fancy grocery store where I shop has portable scanner guns by the front door, and I can scan everything as I go, and then checkout in under 30 seconds (no exaggeration) at the checkout at the end.

You don't even need the scanner gun for the self scanning, because there's also an app you can use to scan everything and checkout with your phone.

Zero human interaction required. It's a misanthropes paradise.

This right here is the only "bug" with the system-

Cause there's no one around when I want to check out booze

But I've learned some workarounds. The best is to buy the booze separate from the groceries at the clerk's counter in the booze department, who is pretty much always available. The other way is to go to the self checkout that's closest to where the clerks are, and it makes it pretty easy to get their attention for a quicky quick age verification for the booze.

I have even worked out a system whereby I grab a cart in the parking lot, put my handy dandy laundry basket into the cart, do all my self-scan shopping, checkout in under 30 seconds, go out to the lot, and load the grocery-loaded laundry basket into my car.

Bing boom done. No waiting in lines, no interaction with humans, and no bags required.

Get with the times, ya luddites.

Oh, and the system won't work if niggers are involved, because niggers ruin everything.

God forbid that the new tech be properly designed to ackshully be easy, effective and humanly beneficial to use.

Form follows function. If you want your customers to be witless shadow workers, then make it a pleasant experience so they don't notice that they're being played.

Self checkout works like a charm here in Germany, because no matter what you may have heard, our Negro pop is far lower.

Also we do not have laws enabling theft (yet)

One thing that annoys me that at one of the terminals only allows electronic payments but the things still asks wether you wanna pay with cash.

Also previously the fucking thing talked to you, luckily that stopped.

Wherever you shop must have crappy older models -- everywhere I shop that uses self-checkout has a button on screen for "use my own bag" that avoids this whole problem.
Mebbe so. All I know is that if I set my bag down on the bagging platform before I start to scan the AI chimps out with an "unauthorized item detected in the bagging area" alert. And locks up.

For purchasers of produce and bulk foods, self-checkouts are a miraculous technology. Literally. At the point of sale, pine nuts are divinely transubstantiated into rolled oats costing 1/25 of their price. Pistachios become peanuts. Dried cherries and blueberries become cheap raisins. And all the fancy organic produce turns into non-organic stuff, at least if you have enough brain cells to remember the memorize the codes for it. Who says the store isn't paying you for the work you do?

Yeah, I remember when the self-checkouts at my local place used to do the same thing. I think there must be different programs or apps or versions or whatever.

I don't know the machines where you live, but at my place it's as idiot proof as possible and boomers still fuck around with it way too much.

You might as well wish for a fucking Unicorn to deliver to you a big titty princess for you to marry than to think a large corporation is going to spend money on decent technology.

What stops the "shopper" from stealing all or most of his purchases, or at least the high-value stuff? Do you have to dox yourself at the till by scanning some sort of ID before buying, or is there a sort of automatic gate system?
Hypersensitive weight sensors in the bagging area, cameras and one or more wagies manning the self-checkout area.
Conversely, what happens when the shop fucks with the customer (product's scanned price does not match its shelf price or is scanned twice, alternatively the auto-checkout steals your cash or debits your card more than once)?
There is a button you can press to call the wagie over. How long it takes the wagie to come over is another matter.
I don't get a reduction in my bill for using the self-checkout which benefits the company through lowered wages. So fuck self check outs. I'll stand in a queue to make wagey bag my shit out of spite.

A lot of people at work openly admit to stealing from self-checkouts. Usually stuff worth <£5 but they do it once, sometimes twice a day, and it's a trend cottoning on. They say if they get caught they'll feign ignorance.
If I'm expected to scan my own stuff unpaid, mistakes are going to be made. Don't like it? Fire me.
There's zero ergonomic design with the self check outs. You must bend to get your stuff outta the cart and then bend again to scan it and then bend again to place it on the even lower bagging area with the hidden scale. It's punishing if your back ain't great. Ya can't park your own bag there to simply bag as you go, the scale detects the extra weight and assumes you're stealing. So the whole process stops until the one sullen employee minding six busy scanning stations is available to reset it with their password and a few codes.
That's my biggest issue too. They gimp the fuck out of the self-checkout registers so you can't scan fast, can't bag your items after scanning and the ergonomics are complete dogshit. So I am stuck in the shit hole store even longer doing a job I'm not being paid to do. Very annoying.

None of the models I've used have that. You have to lay all your stuff out then bag it afterward. I would expect it's more of a "too many thieving niggers around" issue than a software issue.
