The girls are pissed at r/mtf because an unbeliever argued that sex and gender are different, and that they are not biologically female.
I'm kinda just getting tired of discourse around biological sex within the trans community. With all the people arguing over whether post-hormone/post-op trans people are biologically whatever... it doesn't matter. Biological sex is an abstraction that has its uses in most cases, but it just doesn't really make sense to apply it that generally to ourselves (trans people) as individuals, because we know that we're fringe cases.
We know that, even after hormones and operations, there are still distinct aspects of our bodies--not just chromosomes--essentially unique to the male sex; and that's fine. There's also many aspects of our bodies at that point unique to the female sex as well. There are things we can change and things we can't, and quibbling over biological terminology doesn't help any of it, especially given that most of us also aren't biologists.
The existence of intersex and medically transitioning trans people does not mean the abstractions of biological sex are completely useless. It means that there are people between or overlapping the boundaries of the terminology, just like most abstractions, and it means more specificity is required to describe ourselves in that way--if we have to at all.
It's just... what matters is gender. I don't mean that in a "just accept your body ez" kinda way, because I plan to transition medically as well, but when I see other trans women get upset over being described as "biologically male" or "not biologically a women" (not just as an emotion, I mean, because obviously that's something we'll get dysphoric about, but to take it to the point of an actual argument that trans women are biologically female, or that sex is completely useless even as a general biological categorization) I feel like the discussion has been shifted to a point that it's started excluding non-transitioning or pre-transitioning trans people.
There is a fundamental difference between sex and gender, and the proof by existence here is the fact that I'm a woman in a body that can only be described as phenotypically male (well, not only described as such, as it could also be described as just meeting the threshold by which it can be considered "tall" without added qualifiers, somewhat feminine but not in a way that could be mistaken regularly for female, and somewhat poorly designed as it comes close to fainting every time it sits or stands up*****). That body makes me uncomfortable and unhappy, yes, but I'm still a woman and my body is still male. Once I start hormones, then yes, the lines will start to shift, but I couldn't call myself 100% phenotypically female either, nor would I feel righteously indignant that other people wouldn't either (unless it became a pointed thing intended to taunt me, of course). And maybe there will be the technology to eventually make that a possibility, and that would be amazing! But it's not there yet, and even then there would STILL be a distinction between sex and gender as social constructs because one is a biological categorization and one is a social identity.
